MARY LOWENBERG Obituary

MARY ANN LOWENBERG Mary Ann Lowenberg of University Place, Washington, entered eternal peace, on Jan. 5, 2024 at St. Anthony's Hospital, in Gig Harbor, Washington. Mary was born in Iowa City, Iowa on Feb. 27, 1946 to Dr. Clifford Kobayashi and Catherine Kwon Kobayashi. Dr. Kobayashi was doing his Pediatric residency and her mom was an RN. She was one of a set of twins born prematurely. Her sister did not survive and is buried in Iowa City. She graduated from Roosevelt HS in Honolulu in 1964. She was a very good swimmer. She also enjoyed working Ginaca (a machine that could peel and core pineapples) at the pineapple cannery. She had a beehive hairdo when it was in fashion. She went back to Iowa for college at the University of Iowa. There she met the love of her life, Timothy J. Lowenberg. They moved to Washington state for Tim's work, before she graduated. She and Tim were blessed with a baby girl, Cathy Malia. Mary later took up pottery and created beautiful bowls and plates. She loved doing craft shows to show and sell her pottery. In addition to substitute teaching, Mary was active in charity events, book clubs and collected art, created by friends and others. She returned to Hawaii at least once a year to visit her parents and had plans to move back when Tim retired. Her dream was not realized because of health problems which eventually took her life. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Maj. General Timothy J. Lowenberg, and her father Dr. Clifford K. Kobayashi. She is survived by her mother, Catherine K. Kobayashi, her daughter Cathy Malia Lowenberg, her sisters, Susan Schwab of Madison, Wisconsin, Barbara Kobayashi of Honolulu, HI, Rita May of Denver, Colorado, nieces and nephews. Her generosity, humor and spirited personality will be missed. Private funeral. Donations in her memory to Washington Youth Academy, Bremerton Washington, Maui Food Bank or Maui Strong will be appreciated.

Mary was one of my father's students, F. Carlton Ball, when he offered classes in pottery at Old Gown Potter's in Tacoma. My father always enjoyed the smart, snappy banter that he shared with Mary. He enjoyed her company and I remember the two of them setting up displays of their pottery at the "Art inMotion" exhibit at the Puyallup Fair. I am so sorry for your loss, Cathy. Your mother was a loving and fun person to know.
