MASATAKA HIRAYAMA Obituary

MASATAKA HIRAYAMA Masataka Hirayama, affectionally known as "Masa," 85, passed away on February 25, 2026 at Duncan Manor, Nevada. Born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, he was the eleventh child of twelve born to Kimiko and Kiyoshi Hirayama. After graduating from Hilo High School, he moved to Oahu which became home. Predeceased by two wives, Carolyn Hatakeyama and Carol Ann Haili, Masa is survived by his daughter, Rae (Eric) Yoshida, Maui; sons, Paul (Maria), Las Vegas; Blaine Kaulana, Oahu; and Andrew Makana (Geena), Oahu. Masa is survived by sisters, Hisae Ibara, Naomi Shiigi, and brother Richard, 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Masa's lifetime companion and soulmate, was his beloved Karen Shishidothey were inseparable enjoying karaoke, fishing, sumo, golfing and socializing. Masa's legacy was judo at the Boys and Girls Club, Moiliili and Koolau Judo Clubs, member of JBBAH (Judo Black Belt Association of Hawaii), and coaching at Aiea High School. His dream of attaining a Black Belt Rokudan degree (red and white belt) was achieved in 2023. Masa had a unique, deep, baritone voice and loved to sing oftentimes wearing a kimono and mostly Japanese songs. Masa was also an excellent cook specializing in pupus, such as raw oio, namako, dried aku, loko and will be remembered for his somen salad, steamed fish, and soups. Masa would have wanted to celebrate his life as he livedfun, full of life, drink, eat well, and love deeply. A celebration of Life will be held on May 9 by invitation.
