Michael Herb Obituary

Michael was born in Berkeley, CA on February 15, 1937 and passed away on December, 20 in Walnut Creek, CA. Mike attended Stanford on a Navy ROTC Scholarship and returned to Berkeley to graduate from UC Berkeley in 1958. He was a lifelong CAL Bear!
Commissioned as a LTJG in the Navy, he served for 3 years on the US Lexington. Earning his MBA from Harvard in 1963, Mike and his wife Merry Athern Herb raised their 3 children in the Bay Area until they moved to Honolulu in 1973 when Mike became A&B's first corporate planner. He later joined Dean Witter and retired from Morgan Stanley as a senior VP.
Mike was known for his civic engagement and mentoring. He was a founder of the Hawaii Society of Corporate Planners (now Hawaii Society of Business Professionals). He served as board president of both the Hawaii Heart Association and the March of Dimes and was a co-founder and president of the UC Berkeley Club of Hawaii as well as president of the Stanford Club of Hawaii. Post retirement, he was a board member of the Chaminade University Hogan Entrepreneurs Program, a leader in SBA's SCORE, active in the Honolulu, Rotary and an avid jazz supporter. This is the short list of his contributions.
In 1991 Mike met Nancy Davis Lewis (also from CAL, a professor at UH, later director of research at the EWC). Mike and Nancy were married for 27 years and shared incredible extended families, adventure, travel, food, intellectual engagement, serving their community, and wickedly competitive dominoes games. In April, Nancy and Mike returned home to CA, and a progressive senior community, Viamonte, in Walnut Creek.
Mike is survived by his wife, Nancy D Lewis (Walnut Creek), his children, Deborah Herb Hu/Steve (Hong Kong), Rick Herb (San Rafael), and Kathryn Herb Whitman/John (Hawaii), his stepson, Daren Lewis/Sarah Manuel (Portland) and seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, 2 more on the way. Mike was preceded in death by his younger brother, Peter Herb.
