Michael Smith Obituary

MICHAEL SCOTT SMITH Michael Scott Smith died on July 4 at his home in California. He was 78. Dr. Smith was raised in the small California Central Valley town of Sanger. He followed a love for science to medical school at the University of Southern California. After earning his medical degree in 1970, he launched what would become a 53 year labor of love helping literally tens of thousands of people in a wide range of hospitals, clinical practices, and educational settings. At times he worked at the Ma'ili Clinic and Kaiser Hospital on Oahu. He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Mike's entire professional life was devoted to helping others, and he took that role both as a blessing that he cherished, and as a responsibility to continuously learn and improve his own skills. While in medical school, Mike met the love of his life, nursing student Maria Christina DiLeva, of San Pedro, California. They married just months after meeting, and soon they had three children. Alongside his busy life as a doctor, Mike was a devoted and loving father. Mike and Maria eventually lived in Los Angeles, French Camp, Orange, Modesto, Hawaii, San Pedro, and Menlo Park -- and they travelled the world beyond that -- but Mike never lost his grounding, family values, and loving commitment to help those around him. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Maria; his children Michael Smith, Stephen Smith and Jennifer Lutton; and his dear grandchildren, Oliver Smith, Maria Gagan, Ella Smith, Jack Smith, Mikey Smith, and Olesya Smith; and many beloved friends and family. The family asks that any memorial donations be made to Samaritan House of San Mateo County, Free Medical Clinic (https://samaritanhousesanmateo.org/), or another charity of your choosing. Every time I think of people that had a profound effect on my life´s journey, Dr. Mike is one of the first that comes to mind, not just as my physician, but as a friend. He really cared about me and my children at a time we needed all the help we could get. I always considered him a gift from God. I admired him as a physician, friend, husband, father...just a wonderful human being. He will always be remembered by my family.

I first met Doctor Michael Smith in Southern California. We were both in a medical Residency (training) program at the Orange County Medical Center (known today as "The UCI Medical Center". We became friends & continued our friendship after we completed our respective residency programs.

After Mike completed his Residency, he & his family moved to Modesto where he entered the private practice of internal medicine as a member of the McHenry Group. Also, he was responsible for enticing me to move to Modesto after I completed my residency training program.

I always had tremendous respect for Mike who was, indeed, an outstanding, caring physician. And, he was highly respected by both his patients & Modesto's physicians.

I am proud to have been a friend. He will be missed by all of us.

I grew up across the street from Michael Smith in Sanger, Ca., and my dad was his mailman for many years. He was eight years older, but our paths crossed in Modesto in 1984, when Doctors Hospital made an appointment with then Dr. Smith, after a bout of pneumonia my first year in town. He recognized the name, asking if I ever lived in Sanger, and had nice things to say about my mom and dad, even remembering going fishing with my dad when he lived at home. We spent the rest of the appointment talking about hurricane Iwa hitting Kauai in 1982, I must have mentioned it was just about my favorite place.

Marilyn and I send our blessings to the Smith Family. We first met Mike and Maria in 1992 when Mike started working at the Maili Clinic in Hawaii. He brought a breath of fresh air to the clinic. He was an astute clinician that delivered excellent patient care. It was a pleasure working with him, he elevated the level of knowledge of those working around him, including myself. Beyond being an excellent physician he was enjoyable to talk to with a funny sense of humor, he loved his wife and was proud of of his children and grand children. He had a interesting wine collection which we got share a few times. After we left Hawaii I kept in touch mainly through phone calls. It was always a pleasure talking to him and I will miss our conversations. He fought a tough battle, now he is at peace.
God Bless

Dear Maria and family,
When you were living in Modesto and our children were attending Central Catholic, Mike was, also, my family doctor. Mike was the finest doctor and human being I've ever met. He made a profound impact on my life and those of my children (John & Mary Potter), as we journeyed through a rough home life. I've thought of all of you, often, since you left Modesto. I was so saddened by Mike's passing and your family will continue to be in my prayers, always. Mike made the world a better place for many.
