Mildred Tahara Obituary

MILDRED YUTAKO TAHARA Mildred Yutako Tahara, 98, passed away peacefully at her home on January 6, 2024. She was born in Honomu on the Big Island to Wyldonn Jitsusaburo Tanimoto and Helen Baptiste Oliver. Besides fishing, one of Mildred's favorite pastimes was going to the movies, which began with her family's theaters in Honomu and Honokaa (People's Theatre). In 1946, Mildred married Yoshiyuki "Fat" Tahara. His military (HARNG) career brought the family to Oahu in 1963. She was proud of her family and home where she made gatherings special with her cooking and baking talents. Fat was a 442nd RCT veteran. After his passing, Mildred was proud to continue their legacy and support his "H" Company group by volunteering at 442nd/100th functions. Mildred had a zest for life, quick wit, and mischievous sense of humor. She was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grand- mother and aunty. Family, neighbors, and friends remember her caring and kind ways. Mildred was predeceased by husband Lt. Colonel Yoshiyuki Tahara, brothers Alvin and Leslie Tanimoto and sister Janet Shishido. She is survived by children Sandra Kagesa, Lynette Kim, April Carvalho (J), Troy Tahara, and Pearl Bello (Guy), brother Lawrence Tanimoto (Sommai), sister Edna Nowaki (Robert), grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and many other beloved relatives. A Celebration of Mildred's Life will be held on her 99th birthday, Thursday, April 4th at Hosoi Garden Mortuary. Visitation begins at 10 AM with service to follow at 11 AM.
