O. DANIEL VAN ZYLE Born November 9th.1942 in Petoskey Michigan to Ruth Harold VanZyle, he was the second born of twin boys. The boys grew up hunting and fishing with their mother and Ruth, a talented artist in her own right, encouraged her sons to use their talent to paint and draw the natural world around them. In the late 1950's the VanZyle family moved to Colorado, where Dan wrestled in high school and went on to graduate in 1961. Dan also enlisted in the Colorado National Guard and completed his active duty. Dan and his brother moved to Hawaii in the mid 60's to work in construction and to help support their mom. An avid diver and fisherman led Dan to Hanauma Bay one afternoon, where he met Rosalyn Alameida, the love of his life. Dan and Roz married in 1969. Once married they opened Graphicenter, a small but successful family owned advertising agency. Due to Roslyn's PR savy and Dans talented art work they attracted some of the more notable firms in Hawaii as clients, but Dan wanted to follow his passion and create true art. Dan closed Graphicenter and the rest is history. He went on to be recognized for his talent throughout his life. Dan's drawing skills were also recognized as co-founder of Hawaii Artists Society, Hawaii Audubon Society Artist 1989 -1990, Hawaii Ducks Unlimited Artist 1992-1994, Hawaiian State Conservation Stamp 1997- 1998, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, as well as Honolulu Academy of Arts. Dan's love of Hawaiian bird life was recognized by Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology's Permanent Collection in New York state. Roslyn and Dan's involvement at The Hawaii Nature Center helped enable it to became an important learning center for children and adults of all ages in Honolulu. He and Roz were also involved in the early efforts to bring back the Hawaiian Nene to the islands. Dan's art life was not only limited to Hawaii, his many Limited Edition off set prints were published by International art publishers APPLEJACK Art Partners of Vermont and distributed to hundreds of art galleries throughout the U.S.A. and Canada. Dan's real artistic love was drawing with pencil. Stone Lithography which is the art of drawing on Bavarian Limestone, printing each by hand, became his true love of art, along with etchings and dry point on Copper plate, all accomplished at his art publishers studio in Gwemus Washington. Many one color or multi color, signed and numbered limited editions were beautifully rendered with virtuoso drawing skills and distributed through galleries worldwide. Hi paintings of Hawaii were shown in several galleries in the U.S., among them, his favorite of all, The Volcano Art Gallery, on the island of Hawaii. In 2025, Dan had his 50th year association exhibition with them. Dan is survived by his brother Jon Van Zyle, Sister-in-law Pam Princenthal, Brother-in-law Will Alameida, niece Lindsay Correa and nephews Dustin Salsido and Joshua Strickland and his beloved grand Nieces and nephews.
