Vena LaRayne Edwards

Paul was my uncle who always referred to me as Vena La Rayne and not Punkin, a family nickname. He was a respected man by the entire family. He was very personable ,nonjudgmental, and encouraging. I didn´t get to see him very often but I knew he loved me. And a little fun fact to tell Is that I was the flower girl in his wedding to Diane!!

My mom was the first of the family to be named, Vena, after my paternal great grandmother. Other family members called me "Punkin", to differentiate the two Vena's under one roof. But Uncle Paul preferred to call me by my proper name, Vena La Rayne, which I really liked. We didn't get to see Paul, Diane, Courtney and Kim because they lived in Northern California. But a special fact is that when I was 4 or 5 yrs old, I was the flower girl in their wedding! They had a beautiful wedding in the mountains of LaVerne, California. All the bridesmaids, including my mom, and I had beautiful gowns made of satin and a special trim. I inherited my mom's dress years later when I was in my 30's.
When I was a young mom, my uncle Paul sent me my first set of dishes. They lasted decades. I still have one plate left and won't give it up because my he gave them to me.. I also inherited an Asian robe that Uncle Paul gave to my mom, that she carefully preserved. It is hanging up in my bathroom currently! I am honored to inherited a beautiful and ornate tea cup set the he brought back from his travels to the Orient while he was in the Navy. He gave to his mother, my grandmother, Mercedes. They have Pewter handles that match pewter saucers. They are precious to me. I had great admiration for Uncle Paul for his other careers in Hawaii. I bragged that he was a CEO of the famous Dole Fruit Company, Mauna Loa and Sakata seed company; one of the largest seed companies in the world. I wanted to visit them in Hawaii in recent years, but didn't have the time away from work. I was delighted that he showed up for one of our boy's wedding in Minnesota! I had tears of joy when I was surprised by their attendance. He was a special uncle to me and will be missed.

Our grief continues being painful. But as we get ready for the trip to Hawaii for the funeral and Celebration of Life events, for Paul, we are comforted by preparing memories to share and by the loving support of family and friends. THE LUTHEYS
