RANDY KIYOSHI KAWAKAMI A proud veteran and devoted family man, Randy Kiyoshi Kawakami dedicated his life to serving both his country and the people he loved. He died peacefully on November 7, 2025, in
Honolulu, Hawaii. Born in Hilo, Hawaii, he was the eldest son of Thomas and Grace Kawakami. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to excellence. In addition to being an outstanding student, Randy earned a blackbelt in Kendo and achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. He loved building model ships and planes and was an avid military history enthusiast. After graduating from Hilo High School, Randy enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Corporal. Following his honorable discharge from the Marines, Randy enrolled at the University of Hawaii, and he continued his military involvement as a Senior Airman in the Air National Guard. Upon receiving his degree, Randy joined the U.S. Navy, where he advanced to the rank of Lieutenant. He served in the Gulf War and received numerous commendations throughout his military career, including the Meritorious Service Medal (Air National Guard), the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal. After concluding his military service, he served as a Military Housing Inspector, where he was widely respected for his leadership, fairness, and dedication to excellence. Randy deeply loved his mother, Grace, and like her, was kind, generous, and devoted to his family. He was known for his warmth, humor, and hearty laugh. He never forgot a birthday or holiday and delighted in spoiling his nieces and nephews. Over the years, he and his wife, Aileen, hosted many large family gatherings and brought loved ones together. Whenever friends or family visited from out of town or overseas, Randy was always the first to offer a ride from the airport and to arrange a celebratory meal. Though he is no longer with us, Randy's selflessness lives on in the many people whose lives he touched. Just as he was shaped by his mother's compassion, he passed on that same legacy of kindness and generosity. Randy is survived by his wife, Aileen Kawakami; brother Wayne (Jeri) Kawakami; sisters Shari (Noel) Nakamura and Gail Kawakami (Scott Makuakane); his beloved dog, Aya; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. An inurnment service for Randy Kawakami, with full military honors, will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl).
