RICHARD AND LORAINE PANG Obituary
DR. RICHARD AND MRS. LORAINE PANG Dr. Richard and Mrs. Loraine Pang both passed away within 4 months of one another after 67 years of marriage. Loraine passed away January 7th, 2023, at the age of 91. Richard rejoined Loraine in eternity, April 15th, 2023, at the age of 93. Their life together was extraordinary. Loraine Nien Yi Loo Pang was born September 21, 1931, in Shanghai China to Ann Lau Loo and Koon Chong Loo of Honolulu. She was brought back to Oahu prior to the outbreak of WWII. She worked at the family business, the Pee Wee Store in Manoa. She attended Punahou and graduated in 1949. Thereafter, she left for the mainland where she received a bachelor's degree in business at UC Berkeley. Richard Kum Sum Pang was born August 20, 1929, in Honolulu Hawaii to Cheu Quon Pang and Nora Chock Pang and grew up in Pauoa. As a boy, he helped work in the family business, a Hawaiian gift shop downtown. Richard graduated from Iolani in 1947. He decided to follow the examples of his uncles, LQ and HQ Pang who were both local physicians. Richard went on to earn a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Northwestern University in 1951 and his medical degree from Tulane in 1956. Thereafter, Richard studied general surgery and subsequently thoracic and vascular surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, completing his training in 1961. He trained under Dr.'s DeBakey and Cooley. Richard and Loraine met at a party in Honolulu, after Loraine had returned from Berkeley. Their first date was a dinner dance on Coconut Island. They were married June 11, 1955, and toured Canada and the US as Richard returned to New Orleans to complete his final year of medical school. Loraine managed the home, started a family, and worked full time, while Richard completed his residency and subsequent fellowship. Upon their return to Honolulu, Loraine enjoyed raising the children while still managing a wonderful career as a professional fundraiser--having worked at Punahou, The Honolulu Advertiser, The East West Center, and the Contemporary Museum. Richard came back to Honolulu to join the multispecialty Chock Pang Clinic, and later pursued solo practice predominantly working at St. Francis Medical Center. In 1987, Richard was part of the team that performed the state of Hawaii's first heart transplant. Loraine was known for her keen wit and charm, with a natural ability to make all she encountered feel special and liked. She was also a fierce advocate for her family and all those she considered a friend. Loraine, like her mother before her, was also an incredible cook and baker. She hosted a family dinner every Sunday where she adapted and optimized creations that kept her family amazed and coming back for more. Richard was renowned for his surgical skills, for being a gentleman, and for being a devoted husband and father. His quiet demeanor was perfectly balanced by Loraine's outgoing spirit. His greatest joys were time spent with family, Loraine's fantastic cooking, and going fishing out of Kaneohe. The couple had a shared passion for travel and visited nearly all the corners of the world. Richard and Loraine are survived by their son Richard and his wife Tamara and son Ricky; son Lance and partner Corlis; daughter Terrie Livingston and her two sons Xander and Xoren; son Dean and his wife Anna and their children Nicole and Evan; daughter Lynn Hildebrandt and her husband Kurt and their children Kiani and Kurt.
