Roberta Bishop Obituary

ROBERTA (BIRD) OZAKI BISHOP Age 76, of Honolulu, died December 26, 2023, at the Queen's Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. Never complaining, she fought a heroic battle against metastatic lung cancer. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, her family returned to Honolulu shortly thereafter. Bird attended University Lab School and received a B.A. in History from UH. Her 40-year career in education began at the Honolulu Waldorf School, first as a teacher and then as Head of School. She later worked as an Education Specialist at UH's Center on Disability Studies and was Associate Director at the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools. She loved teaching, mentoring, spending time with family, reading, traveling, and anything to do with sports. She excelled in tennis and was a 6-time USTA National Amateur Team Finalist, bringing home 4 first place trophies. Later turning to golf, she scored her first hole-in-one at age 76. Bird was loved and respected by all who knew her and was a loyal and compassionate friend. Her love, generosity, and spirit will live in our hearts forever. Predeceased by her sister Shirley Rizzuto (Jim), and survived by husband Howard Bishop, son Chris Kasperowicz, daughters Tara O'Riley (Nick) and Lindsey Freitas (Kepa), grandchildren Finn, Nikko, and Reiko O'Riley, and Kiley Kawena and Edward Kainalu Freitas, brother Robert Ozaki (Rebecca), sisters Kendra Ozaki and Terri Gedo (Andy), and many nieces, nephews, and other beloved relatives. A Celebration of Life will be held on the grounds of the Honolulu Waldorf School, 350 Ulua St., on Saturday March 9, 2024, at 2 pm. Limited seating available for kupuna and those in need.
