Robin Otagaki Obituary

ROBIN OTAGAKI Robin Otagaki, age 76, passed away on January 27th, 2026, in Honolulu, leaving behind a community that is richer for having known him. Robin was born in Berkeley, California on May 19th, 1949, to Kenneth and Janet Otagaki. When he was five years old, his family returned to Hawaii and settled in Manoa Valleya place that would become not just his home, but a part of his soul. Robin graduated from UH Lab School and went on to earn his teaching degree from UH Manoa, a fitting beginning for a man who would devote his life to nurturing young minds. He began his career at Moanalua High School, where his gift for bringing science to life quickly set him apart. In 1981, he was honored with the Hawaii State Teacher of the Year Awarda reflection of his rare ability to spark curiosity and wonder in every student who walked through his door. In 1986, Robin began what would become a cherished chapter of his life at Punahou School, where he taught until his retirement in 2009. Over those twenty-three years, he built something extraordinary; cultivating genuine relationships with faculty, staff, and hundreds of former students who still speak of "Mr. O" with affection. Robin and Sharon first met as leaders for the Summer Fun Program at Manoa Valley Park in 1971. Six years later, they married and raised two daughters, Erin and Devin, whom Robin guided through countless adventures, filling their childhoods with laughter and discovery. In his later years, he became "Papa" to four grandchildren whom he adored. What those who loved Robin will remember most is his joy. He had a laugh that filled a room and a warmth that made everyone around him feel seen and valued. He spread good humor generously, and without reservation. Robin is survived by his wife Sharon; daughters Erin Otagaki and Devin (Taryn) Otagaki; grandchildren Allie, Luke, Riley, and Regan; godson Scott Gamble; sisters Joy (Gary) Miyashiro, Jill Otagaki, and Fern (Earl) Canio, and their families. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 9th, at Punahou Chapel on the Punahou School campus. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a service at 10:00 a.m., with refreshments to follow. The family kindly requests no floral arrangements. Those who wish to honor Robin's memory are encouraged to consider a donation to Punahou School or Malama Manoa, two places that meant the world to him, and to which he gave so much in return.
