RODNEY SANTOS Obituary

RODNEY P. SANTOS Rodney Peter Santos, the only child of Manuel and Isabel Santos was born on June 29, 1931. He passed away on June 24, 2023, just shy of his 92nd birthday. He lived most of his life in his family home at 554-A N. Kalaheo Avenue. Rod was a proud member of the Class of 1949 from St. Louis High School. He served our country as an ambulance driver in the Korean War and upon his return home, went on to become an exemplary teacher and volunteer tutor at his alma mater for 36 years. He taught Economics, Government, Geography and mentored the Crusader Yearbook staff. In 2004 he received the "Brother Edward Gomez Award" honoring an exceptional Saint Louis employee. He continued to give to his school by establishing the Rodney P. Santos Scholarship. He was a voracious reader and lifelong learner until he lost his eyesight. Rod knew a lot about a lot of things. His love of sports continued with his transistor radio listening to all the football games, always cheering for the St. Louis Crusaders and the University of Hawaii Warrior football teams. When he could no longer live independently, the Caregiver Foundation and Mr. Gary Powell graciously took over managing his care. Thank you to St. Louis Alumni for helping him celebrate his 91st birthday after learning of his plight: UH head coach Timmy Chang, Duke Aiona, Brian Cabral and St. Louis President Glenn Medeiros. Your kindness and thoughtful messages and gifts brought him to tears. Thank you to Malamaimua for your excellent care during the last few years of his life. Rod is survived by his loving cousins, neighbors, students, and colleagues. Service to be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the Mystical Rose Oratory Chapel, on the campus of St. Louis School & Chaminade University. Visitation: 9:30 a.m.; Service: 10:00 a.m. Burial: 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 17th, at Hawaiian Memorial Park, Mount Calvery section. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Louis School 3142 Waialae Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816 ATTN: Nola
