Roland Tatsuguchi Obituary

REV. ROLAND KANAMI TATSUGUCHI Roland Kanami Tatsuguchi, 93, resident minister of Shinshu Kyokai Mission, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2024. Visitation and a funeral service will be held at Shinshu Kyokai Mission on Sunday, April 28, 2024, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and funeral at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shinshu Kyokai Mission in his memory. Roland dedicated his life and studies to Jodo Shinshu, serving at Shinshu Kyokai for 63 years. He was born on November 1, 1930, in Pawaa on Aloha Lane (now Kaheka Street) to Reverends Goki and Yoshiko Tatsuguchi. He received his B.A. in Sociology from Baker University, M.A. in Sociology from the University of Kansas, M.A. in Shin Buddhism from Ryukoku University, and a M.Ed. in Educational Psychology and Ed.D. in Educational Foundations from the University of Hawaii. Roland also earned certification as a DOE Elementary and Special Education teacher and taught at the Pohukaina School for students with developmental disabilities. He appreciated the specialness of Hawaii's people and our multicultural heritage. Some of his favorite "local kine" dishes were beef cutlet, curry, poke, and roast duck. Hobbies in his younger years were fishing, playing his Kamaka ukulele, and golfing. In his later years he enjoyed karaoke, TV broadcasts of sumo tournaments and the Wheel of Fortune game show, and most recently, birdwatching for the beautiful Manu O Ku white terns that visited the temple. Roland is survived by his wife Sumiko; children T. Karen Hanada, Lee (Donald) Tatsuguchi, Keith (Jan) Tatsuguchi; grandchildren Marissa and Ryan; and sisters Cordelia Larson, Lois Suzuki, and Rosalie Tatsuguchi. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Samson and sister Emmeline. Arrangements Provided By: Hosoi Garden Mortuary

He was thoughtful and generous. He gave me my favorite fishing pole. He was also a master cook, being skilled enough to prepare even the deadly fugu.
