Russell Dang Obituary

RUSSELL DANG 69, of Honolulu, passed away unexpectedly on July 3rd, 2024. Russell is survived by wife, Gwen, daughter, Shemya and Miso (beloved furry family). He is also survived by siblings: Mike (Shelley) Dang, Debra (David) Hooper, Geniel Ulu (Karl) Sanft. He is predeceased by his parents, Reginald J.Y. and Mary Luukia (Tau'a) Dang. Russell retired as a Captain for the City and County of Honolulu Fire Department after 20 years of service in 2010. Prior to the Fire department he worked for 8 years with Hawaiian Homes. He graduated from Kaimuki High school in 1973, obtained his Bachelor's degree in Human Development from UH-Manoa, and an AS degree in Fire Science from HCC. Russell loved being with friends, surfing, playing and listening to music, working out, and in his younger years enjoyed playing volleyball. He was called RD by his closest surfing buddies and looked forward to surf trips in Indonesia and other places. Due to numerous injuries, Russ was sidelined from surfing but always focused on returning to the ocean that he loved. Russ enjoyed being with his daughter and was a doting and dedicated father supporting all her school and extra-curricular activities. After retirement, Russ spent his time playing drums, surfing, working out, chauffeuring his daughter around, cleaning the house, and giving their family pets amazing lives. Russ was a loving best friend and companion to his wife. The Covid pandemic was an easy transition for him because it gave him an excuse to remain at home and play his drums. He enrolled in online drum lessons with Rich Stitzel - Drum Mantra. He would practice almost all day working on his technique and timing. A celebration of life will be held at Nuuanu Mortuary on August 19, 2024. Visitation is at 10am and service is at 10:30am. Casual attire. Russ liked to attend gatherings and listen to others so the family and Russ welcome and appreciate your time to attend the service, say the last hellos to Russ, and enjoy in fellowship over lunch to celebrate life with others. Please no flowers or monetary gifts (no Koden). Your name in the guest book is all we ask as a remembrance of the occasion. The service will also be online for those on residing on the mainland or unable to attend in person. Arrangements Provided By: Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary LLC

Already missing you cuz. Thanks for turning me on to great, soulful music like Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Always remember when you did so. I'm certain that you're playing a lovely tune for others to enjoy.

First, my sincere condolences to the family of Russell Dang. May God comfort his loving family during this difficult time.
I knew Russell during my high School years and we use to lift weights together at Central YMCA during the summer months. He was very athletic and a good friend to hang out with. Russell, my brother Ralph, and I would enjoy those summer months together. We are all going to miss his wonderful personality and laughter. Rest in peace my brother.
Aloha,
Wayne Siu
