SORRELL WAXMAN Obituary

SORRELL HAROLD WAXMAN, MD It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend and Doctor. "Doc Sam" (as he was affectionately called by family, friends and patients) passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 26, 2023, at home in Kahala. He was 94 years young. He is survived by his beloved wife Dorotia "Tia" Waxman; daughters Kaleo Waxman (Marc Serughetti), Teppi Waxman (Guy Williams); sons Keoni Waxman (Michel) and Kawika Waxman (Brenda); grandchildren: Logan and Madison Williams, Morgan and Makena Serughetti, Story and Kainoa Waxman and Isaiah, Gabriel, Levi and Uriah Waxman and sister Esther Linzon. Sam was born February 01, 1929, in Toronto, Canada and after graduating from the University of Toronto Medical School, he traveled to Hawaii in pursuit of warmer weather. It was on the island of Oahu that Sam met his soon to be bride (of almost 62 years), nurse Tia Adlawan, in the hallways of Children's Hospital. They moved to Seattle, Washington to finish his residency and were married in Seattle on May 13, 1961. Settling back in Hawaii, Doc Sam began his practice in Pediatrics Medicine with a specialty in Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism and an interest in Pediatric Diabetes at Kapiolani Hospital, which he continued until 2014. He was also a Clinical Professor for the Department of Pediatrics at John A. Burns School of Medicine and was involved in the early growth hormone studies. Recognizing the need for his pediatric patients, Sam became the thought leader for GH throughout the islands and was a key contributor in all Genentech GH studies. He also dedicated much of his free time to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and raised his family in Honolulu. Much of his later life was devoted to attending, following and cheering on his grandchildren in their many athletic, artistic and academic pursuits. His love of family, practicing medicine and Hawaii touched so many and we are reminded every day when someone says, "Doc Sam was my doctor, and he took care of my kids too." A Celebration of Life will be held on July 14, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park. Announcements and messages can be found at www.dignitymemorial.com under Sorrell H. Waxman.
