STEPHAN CLARK Obituary

STEPHAN DANE CLARK Stephan Dane Clark passed away on May 8, 2023 at the age of 73. He was born August 8, 1949 in Nogales, AZ and spent his childhood there and in San Jose, CA where he graduated from high school in 1967. Steve earned a BS degree in anthropology from the University of California at Davis in 1972, and the following year moved to Hawaii where he would spend the next 46 years of his life. He began work at the Bishop Museum's Department of Anthropology participating in the Statewide Inventory of Historic Places for Maui County. Later, he moved to the Museum's Applied Research Group where he directed survey projects and archaeological excavations on all the major islands. In the early 1990s, Steve became the Cultural Resources Group Leader at Ogden Environmental and Energy (later (AMEC Earth and Environmental), where his work expanded into Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, and other Western Pacific island groups. He became an expert on the prehistory of the Hawaiian Islands, authored or co-authored hundreds of professional reports, and trained a generation of archaeologists under his supervision. In 2003, he and Doug Hazelwood cofounded Pacific Consulting Services, Inc., which continues to specialize in archaeology, historic preservation, and cultural and environmental impact assessments following a professional model Steve worked tirelessly to develop. He retired in 2019 and moved to San Diego to be with his girlfriend. Those who knew Steve will remember him as a soft-spoken and kind person. He loved music and was an accomplished guitar player. He excelled at sports, especially baseball, diving and golf, and collected coins and rocks for most of his life. Steve was preceded in death by his mother and father, Al and Helen Clark, and his younger brother, Michael Clark. He is survived by his girlfriend Cheryl Price of San Diego, CA.; his brother Richard Clark of Tulsa, OK; his sisters Renee Taintor and Lauri Clark of Las Vegas, NV; his half-siblings Chuck Grim of Hulbert, OK and Denise Grim of Cushing, OK; his cousin Dan Clark of Vancouver, WA; and his in-laws Mark Taintor of Papaaloa, HI and Janet Clark of Kapaau, HI.
