Sumiko Chinen Obituary

SUMIKO KOMESU CHINEN Sumiko Chinen was born in Maui on 9/18/1929; at age 3 her family moved to Okinawa and at age 18 she returned to Maui after WWII ended before settling in Honolulu. She endured many hardships, including being widowed at age 43 but she was determined, always smiling, generous and a gifted seamstress, cook and loved making andagi & mochi. She passed away peacefully on 11/16/2024 at age 95 in a loving care home in Waipahu with family at her bedside. Predeceased by her husband, Teichi Chinen, siblings Seichi Komesu and Seiyu Robert Komesu. Survived by her children Leonard (Aileen) Chinen, Bradley Chinen and Christine Chinen and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She commuted by bus everywhere and worked at Hawaiian Togs, Tori Richard, Liberty House alterations but many recall her working for many years at her husband's family restaurant, New Kukui Cafe in Honolulu. She will be missed but remembered as friendly, talking stories with people, singing & dancing to Okinawan music. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, 01/25/2025 at Kalihi Union Church, 2214 N King St, Honolulu. Visitation: 9 am Services: 10 am. Lunch to follow in church gym. Interment on Friday, 01/31/2025 at 9:30 am at NMCP Punchbowl Cemetery. Arrangements Provided By: Oahu Mortuary
