VERNON SANBORN Obituary

VERNON JAMES SANBORN 82, of Santa Maria, California, died peacefully at home on 18 March 2024. Vernon was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on 16 January 1942 and was the 2nd oldest of four boys to parents Robert and Carnation Sanborn. At a young age, their grandparents on the island of Moloka'i raised Vernon and his three brothers. He was proud of his humble upbringing and Hawaiian heritage. He was also a proud graduate of James B. Castle High School in Kaneohe, Hawaii, Class of 1960. After High School he attended one year at the Brigham Young University, Hawaii before serving on a Church mission in American Samoa. After completing his mission, Vernon enlisted in the U. S. Air Force where he served 22 years of dedicated service before retiring in 1988. Following his military career, Vernon worked for the Santa Barbara County Education Office, retiring as a Safety Officer after 30 years of service. Vernon was a devoted and life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He also served his community as Boys Scouts assistant Scout Master and as a Reserve Deputy for the Santa Barbara County Sherriff's Department. He was also a highly respected and a well versed High School Basketball and Volleyball Official, calling games throughout Santa Barbara County as a member of the Los Padres Official's Association. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Francis Sanborn and Rodney Roy Sanborn, and his daughter Dennette Sanborn. His survivors include his brother Herman Sanborn, his wife Brenda Sanborn, son Kimo Sanborn, daughter Kathleen Paz, and grandchildren Jonathan Aviles, Brittany Sanborn, Zachary Mason, Tessa Sanborn, Izaiah Paz, Camden Paz, Dani Sanborn-Williamson, Keely Iverson, and Tanner Sanborn-Thomas. His extended family includes three stepchildren, five step grandchildren, and five step great-grandchildren, and his trusted pawed companion Dallas. Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 13 April 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel, 1219 Oak Knoll Road, Santa Maria, CA. Aloha attire is encouraged.

I miss you Vern. You were and still are loved by so many. Those who were lucky enough to know you realize the world was a much better place with you in it. I was honored to call you my Step Dad and appreciated your dry humor more than you knew. Save me a seat up there, and don't forget the popcorn.
