Virginia Wat Obituary

VIRGINIA LUM WAT Born in Honolulu on June 7, 1934, Virginia passed away on October 24th at the age of 90 due to complications arising from a fall she sustained in August. Despite her courageous efforts, she could not overcome her underlying ailments and the rigors of physical therapy. The youngest child of the late Cho Ha and Hong Yew Lum, she attended St. Theresa Grade School and Maryknoll High School, where she graduated in 1952. While working at Bank of Hawaii, she met her husband, Herman Wat whom she married in 1957. Together they owned and operated Sav-Mor Drug Stores, and Gulick and King Street Plaza Pharmacies, which they consolidated and sold to Longs in 2006. They pretty much spent their entire lives side by side both at work and at home, and are reunited once again. They were frequent visitors to Las Vegas where she was an avid video poker player. She also enjoyed accompanying Herman to St. Louis football games, but not nearly as much as attending Punahou music and sporting events that grandsons Lawson and Lowell participated in. Despite struggling with her own health issues, Virginia insisted on being the primary caregiver to Herman for eight years until his passing in 2023. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by all of her siblings: brothers Edward, David, Henry, and Allen Lum, and sisters Helen Wong, Margaret Wong, and Annie Loo. She is survived by daughter Penny (Larry) Tong; grandsons: Lawson (Mie) Tong and Lowell (Mari) Tong; great-granddaughters: Kendall and Avery Tong. Virginia requested that services be private and there be no gifts or flowers.
