Walter Nobuhara Obituary

WALTER SHINJI NOBUHARA Walter Shinji Nobuhara, age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by all his loved ones at home on January 4, 2026. Walter was born in Honolulu on March 11, 1933 to Shigeo and Shizume Nobuhara. He was a proud graduate of 'Iolani School where he was co-captain and center of the high school football team. He played under the legendary Fr. Kenneth Bray during the Year of the Champions 1950-51, when 'Iolani made a clean sweep in the ILH by winning football, basketball, and baseball championships. He studied at Kenyon College and the University of Michigan Dental School where he met the love of his life, Marguerite Muroda of Waianae in 1957 and the two were wed in Honolulu on October 24,1959. Walter and Marguerite ran his dental practice for over 40 years. He was also a Professor of Dental Hygiene at Kapi'olani Community College and the University of Hawai'i for 30 years. To bring the science and benefits of dental hygiene to underserved populations, he taught in American Samoa on behalf of the University of Hawai'i. A true teacher at heart, he frequently spoke at 'Iolani School, sharing the legacy of his former coach, Fr. Bray. He was active with the Hawai'i Junior Chamber of Commerce, promoting dental health in the community and helped develop the dental residency program at Saint Francis Hospital. Walter was an avid, lifelong golfer and Michigan football fan. In his free time, he read books and enjoyed his grandchildren, attending every concert, sports event, music and dance recital and graduation. He also loved to travel with the entire family. Walter leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. He will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of kuleana, and his signature popcorn. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marguerite, sister, Amy (Daniel) Hironaka, son Wade (Cecile), daughter, Kerilyn, grandchildren Chloe, Claire (Ricky), Calais, and Carter Nobuhara and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Sat., March 22, 2026 at St. Alban's Chapel, 'Iolani School. Visitation will be at 10 am, service at 11 am, and refreshments to follow. The family requests no flowers and for those who wish to express sympathy to consider a donation to 'Iolani School at 563 Kamoku Street Honolulu, HI 96826 in Walter's name.
