WALTON LIU Obituary

WALTON GARRETT LIU Walton Garrett Liu, age 70, unexpectedly passed away on November 5, 2024 at Kuakini Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii due to Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. He was born on May 5, 1954 to Herbert & Minnie Liu, both high school teachers at Farrington High School. He was raised in Moanalua, Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Kapalama Elementary, Kapalama Intermediate and Farrington High School. After graduating high school he attended University of Hawaii at Manoa earning a degree in Accounting. He passed the CPA exam and worked as a CPA for a few years before deciding to learn more about tax law and pursued further studies to become a tax attorney. He attended University of California at Davis for his Juris Doctor (JD) degree and obtained his LLM degree, Master in Tax Law from George Washington University. After graduating, he moved back to Hawaii and began his Law practice specializing in 1031 Property Exchanges. He did 1031 Design work and 1031 Tax Analysis. He co-authored Reverse Exchange. Walton met his wife, Nelly Pongco Liu in 1992 transacting multiple 1031 exchanges. After two years, he proposed and they got married on August 27, 1994 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. They were together for 32 blissful years. They were devoted to each other, very supportive of their individual careers. Walton is survived by his beloved wife, Nelly Liu, daughter Arlene Tucker, brother, Crocker Liu, brother's wife Charlene and nephews Graam, Makana and Kupono Liu. He is also survived by his sisters in law, Irma Pongco Bondoc and Susan Pongco Hassler and their respective families. Walton will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. Realtors, escrow officers, lenders, mortgage people and others gravitate to him because he was always willing to share his exceptional knowledge and expertise in 1031 exchanges, oftentimes without compensation. One realtor stated"Walton is such a genius in his field of 1031 exchanges" and another saying "Walton was the Best in his field but was very humble". He always returned calls and emails guiding realtors and their clients. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 30th, 2024 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church located at 800 Kaheka Street (across Don Quijote). Public viewing starts at 8:30 until 10:00 in the morning followed by eulogy and mass. Burial to follow at Mililani Memorial Park at 12:30PM. Please join us in bidding farewell to Walton. Kindly include him in your prayers. Thank you and God bless.
