William Hoohuli Obituary

WILLIAM WILLIE AWEAU HOOHULI The children of William Aweau Ho'ohuli announce his passing on October 24, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on September 9, 1941, to Kulani Lima Hoohuli and Joseph Kahapea Pa'ahao Hoohuli, chiefly descendants whose honored lines stretch from Kumukahi, where the sun is first seen, to Lehua at the far boundary of the island. He entered this world at Nanakuli, O'ahu, beneath the gentle Moa'e winds, among the people and the 'aina that welcomed him. One of fourteen siblings, all but one preceded him into the presence of the Lord; on November 9, 2025, his brother Josiah Lanakila Hoohuli, Sr. departed this life as well. At last the two brothers rest together with those who went before them. At Makua, O'ahu, he met our beautiful mother, Kim Suzanne Salcido, born on June 20, 1942, to Ralph and Matilda Salcido of Montebello, California, whose ancestry holds both the roots of the Indigenous Americas and the families of Europe. She later became one of Hawai'i's respected educators along the Wai'anae Coast and in Central O'ahu. Auwe! Let it be known that our dear mother also passed on June 16, 2025, in Waipi'o. We take comfort knowing that the one who walked beside him in this life welcomed him into the next. Our precious makua were married on August 2, 1969, at St. Joseph's Church in Wai'anae. We spent our early years in Makaha and Wai'anae before settling in Waipi'o, where they remained for 46 years. Friends remember him as "a man full of aloha," a truth we saw in the way he loved and served. He worked for Kaiser Cement Corporation for over 25 years. He served as Maintenance Superintendent, with assignments across Hawai'i, the continental U.S., and Guam. His deep knowledge of mo'oku'auhau guided many families through genealogy, land history, and land court matters. He served on the founding boards of the Wai'anae Comprehensive Center and Ho'ala Kanawai, consulted frequently with the Burial Councils of our state, and served on other boards that supported the land and the community. He and our mother are remembered as founding pillars of Maui Learning Academy. To us, only our dear mother could compare. God rest her sweet soul, for the bond they shared shaped the foundation of our lives. From that love, our father lived as a devoted, honest, and generous man who cared deeply for his family, his homeland, and the lahui. The winds that greeted him at birth now carry him home to Ke Akua. E ho'omaika'i mai no 'o Iehova ia 'oe, a e kia'i ho'i ia 'oe. Amene. He is survived by daughters Suzanne Hoohuli Ely (Danny) and Deborah Hoohuli-McKinney (Sean); son Ralph "Kai" Hoohuli; hanai son Ralph "Nate" Salcido (Zillah); 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Resurrection of the Lord Church in Waipi'o Gentry. Visitation at 9:00 a.m.; service at 10:00 a.m.; reception to follow.

We've been next door neighbors since 1986. You and Kim were the first ones to welcome us to the 'hood. Your generosity over the years was greatly appreciated; the time you loaned us your Dodge wagon so we could pick up a large, boxed item; your trusting us to dog sit your house when you and the kids went on vacation and teaching me the Hawaiian name of the plant outside my house, along with other Hawaiian terms and phrases. Yoshie and I are going to miss you, as we do Kim. Your legacies live on through your children. Aloha Oe.
