William Miller Obituary

WILLIAM BILL RENEE MILLER More than 103 years after his birth, William "Bill" Renee Miller passed away peacefully in his beautiful home on August 24th. Bill was born during the Roaring '20s, experienced the Great Depression, saw the end of Prohibition, and flew dangerous missions into enemy fire on D-Day and in the Battle of Arnhem. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Geology on the GI Bill, but he joined the FBI shortly afterward, leading counterespionage operations against Soviet spies in the UN before being transferred to Hawaii in 1971. Later, he became a private investigator, chasing insurance fraud as a real-life Magnum PI and moonlighting for the CIA. While leading this incredible career, he married the love of his life, Rhoda E. Miller, who passed in 1995. Bill lived on Enchanted Lake in Kailua for the past 50+ years. He loved a good party, both planned and spontaneous, and was the consummate host. All his friends and family knew they could drop in anytime and would be welcome. He was surrounded, loved, and cared for until the end. Bill created an amazing circle of friends, becoming the father figure that so many wanted but never had. He had an incredible ability to make people feel heard, always wanting to hear their stories and share his own. His superpower was welcoming people from all walks of life, earning his home the nickname "The House of Refuge." Bill is survived by his daughter Marian, her husband Charlie, and granddaughter Siena; his son Steven, his granddaughter Jessica (three great-grandchildren: Londyn, Lincoln, and Lennox); and his grandsons Matt (great-grandson Weston), Chris, and Jake, along with Steven's wife, Michelle. Despite being a staunch atheist, he was open to conversing and wondering about life after death. He knew that, whatever lay beyond, his atoms would blend with those in the rest of the universe. My dad, my pal, Bill Miller, is everywhere. And most importantly, always in our hearts. Arrangements Provided By: Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary LLC

Dear Marion, Steven, and family members, I remember Bill (and Rhoda) fondly from our friendship of over 30 years ago. I recognized him at once in the obit picture; same smile, even at 103. A wonderful man! You were fortunate to have him for so long. Lots of good memories!!
