Michael Handley Obituary

Scottsdale-Michael Jesse Handley passed away at the age of 82 on January 5, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Tuscola, IL, on August 31, 1943, the fourth child of Jim and Ruth Handley of Humboldt, IL. He attended Mattoon H.S., where he was a member of National Honor Society and lettered in basketball and tennis. During the Vietnam war, he served in the 1st Cavalry as a combat medic and was awarded the Bronze Star with the V device for valor.

Then he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University, where he earned his mathematics and chemistry degree, was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma social fraternity and met Louise, his wife of 56 years. Next he graduated from Rolla School of Mines and Metallurgy with a master's degree in Operations Research and, after moving to Scottsdale, took additional graduate classes at ASU. Mike was a lifelong learner and a voracious reader of science and math-related books.

He also enjoyed riding his Harley with the Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Riders, and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. In addition, he was a big fan of math puzzles and worked out for over 50 years/5 days a week.

He worked for 35 years in the semiconductor production sector of Motorola, which became Freescale, Inc. After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking, European cruises and visits with family and friends in Illinois and Colorado.

Mike loved God, family and the USA. He was a devoted Lutheran and family man. There were not too many swim meets, softball games and soccer games he missed while his children were growing up. Later, he was in the bleachers to watch and cheer on his "grands".

Mike was predeceased by his parents and three siblings. He is survived by Louise, his children Stacia Novak (Jeff), Jason (Stephanie) and Ben (Valerie); grandchildren Justus Novak (Emily), Abigail Novak (fiancé Riley Hosford), Ryan Handley, Allison Handley, Heath Handley and Tate Handley; several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Living Water Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, followed by inurnment at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix.

Mike & Lou were our next door neighbors in 1975. Our kids were of similar ages. Many wonderful times were spent together. They even became God-parents to our unexpected 3rd child in 1978, Sandra Jeanne Reuse.
