Joseph Danek Obituary

It is with tremendous sadness and much love that the family of Joseph Gerard Danek ("Joe") announces his passing on January 22, 2026, following a year-long battle with cancer. Joe's life was defined by boundless spirit and intellectual energy, which he brought to both his family and his six-decade career shaping national science education, policy, and research.

Above all else, Joe was a deeply devoted husband and father. His idea of a happy day was gathering the children into the car for soccer games, captaining the family's small sailboat on the Chesapeake, fixing things around the house, and offering endless "tips" to his kids. He often said that any success he achieved was because of the bright woman at his side—his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Marita. After meeting in graduate school, Marita and Joe built a life rooted in partnership, adventure, generosity, and enduring love. Known in later years as "Jojo," he took immense pride in the interests and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Always surrounded by family, he cherished each and every one, and they cherished him.

Joe lived by the motto "nunca te rindas"—never give up—a spirit he embodied in every facet of his life and through which he encouraged others. There was no mountain too big for Joe to tackle. Until his final days, he remained filled with hope, determination, gratitude, and humor, meeting challenges with resilience and grace.

A proud graduate of Mount St. Mary's University, Joe began his career as a middle school science teacher in Baltimore, Maryland—an experience that sparked a lifelong commitment to expanding opportunity in science. After earning his Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Maryland, College Park, he joined the National Science Foundation (NSF), where over 26 years he served in numerous positions, including as a member of the Senior Executive Service. At NSF, Joe helped develop and launch 16 national STEM programs spanning K–12 through faculty and institutional development, and directed the agency's first Experimental (now Established) Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), a model for strengthening research capacity in less-resourced states and territories. His commitment to developing research capacity and nurturing diverse scientific talent, including service as Executive Director of the EPSCoR/IDeA Foundation in the early 1990s, led many to call him the "father of EPSCoR." Today, EPSCoR and parallel programs span six federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health's Institutional Development Award (IDeA). After retiring from NSF, Joe co-founded The Implementation Group (TIG), serving as Senior Vice President and later as President and Chief Operating Officer for more than two decades. His work leaves a lasting impact on universities and colleagues across the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Born in Astoria, New York to Joseph and Beatrice Danek, Joe spent his formative years in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with his three siblings. He inherited a love of music from his parents and frequently entertained family and friends with ragtime ballads on the piano and accordion—wherever there was a piano, Joe would be there, singing along. A lifelong athlete, he played golf, soccer, basketball, handball, and tennis, and, in later years, took particular joy in cheering on his grandchildren at soccer and volleyball games.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Marita; his children Joseph (Jody), Jennifer, and Geoffrey; his daughters-in-law Kristin and Mia; his son-in-law Kevin; his cherished grandchildren Isabelle, Milla, Daana, and Monterey; his loving siblings Jeanne, William (Bill), and Raymond; and his faithful dog and close companion, Zoey. While he will be deeply missed, his family remains forever grateful for the many years they were blessed by this amazing man—a husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, colleague, and their beloved "Jojo."

A celebration of life in honor of Joe will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 333 Dubois Road, Annapolis, MD on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Visitation begins at 10 am, with a service at 11 am. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe's memory can be made to the Preservation Hall Foundation to support preservation of New Orleans Jazz or STEMCx to support youth participation in science.

Handsome. Brilliant. Bright & Funny.
Everyone loved Joe. No airs about this professor. Down to earth. Inquisitive, Caring and Kind. He really listened and made you feel important.

An impressive and inquiring mind (which he passed along to Jenny). A funny bone that kept us laughing out loud and never hurt. Not shy, but extremely angry humble. The accolades abound because Joe was one of those people whom you can´t say enough god things about. One could write an encyclopedia of stories remembering Joe. His kids should write a book about life with Joe and Marita. She gave him her all and kept him in balance and on the tracks, so to speak. God put them together and after almost 60 years of marriage it appears their love has grown exponentially!

They were instant friends to Dom and me and we remained cemented in that friendship as we grow old together. Joe went Home to His Creator but his spirit is still alive and thriving here all around us. Quite a man!

Thank you, Lord for putting us on on the Danek path in our travels. It´s been so much fun! We cherish both of them! To Marita, I love you!

What a beautiful life . When someone who shines as bright as Joe passes on it is so difficult for those who basked in the loving light of his presence. Sending my deepest heartfelt condolences to the Danek family.
