Mark Boster/LAT AARON DAVID MAHI Aaron David Mahi, a revered figure in the world of Hawaiian music and culture, sadly passed away on July 6, 2024, at the age of 70. Born on July 9, 1953, to Miguel & Barbara Leilani (Akana) Mahi at St. Francis Hospital in Liliha. He was born to a loving home with an older sister and brother on Hala Drive in Kalihi. Miguel was an equipment installer for Hawaiian Telephone Company, and Barbara worked at home babysitting at the time. Two weeks each summer and holidays were spent with family in Ka'a'awa, enjoying the beach, and preparing pig in an imu for a luau with family and friends. Mahi began his musical journey at an early age with many family members that sang in the church choir, and the opera chorus. He developed a deep passion for Hawaiian culture and its rich musical heritage. His contributions as a musician, composer, conductor, recording artist, and leader of the Royal Hawaiian Band for 24 remarkable years have left an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of Hawaii. Throughout his prolific career, a reputation as a multifaceted musician who inspired generations with his dedication and artistry was earned. Mahi was known for skillful performances and innovative arrangements that breathed new life into lesser-known compositions by classic Hawaiian composers. Commitment to preserving and promoting Hawaiian music extended beyond performance, as he was also a prominent educator and community leader. He believed in sharing the beauty of Hawaiian music with all, ensuring its legacy would continue for future generations. His leadership and passion for the genre made him a beloved figure among music lovers and aspiring musicians alike. Mahi's passing is mourned by many, and he leaves behind a legacy of musical excellence that will be cherished by those who knew him and by the diverse communities that experienced his music. Aaron David Mahi's spirit will continue to resonate through the melodies he created and the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his significant contributions to Hawaiian culture and music. Aaron is pre-deceased by his father Miguel Mahi (2000), and survived by his mother, Barbara Leilani Mahi, sisters Gertrude (Robert) Gunderson, and Beatrice (Robert) Ravenscraft, and brother Gerard (Keli'ikanoe) Mahi, numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins. A private service for family and Community of Christ Church members will be held on September 14, 2024. A public service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Central Union Church Sanctuary, located at 1660 South Beretania Street. Visitation from 10:00 am, Service at 11:00, and a reception to follow in the Parish Hall, where refreshments will be served. Future events being planned include, a spreading of ashes and a memorial in Kaneohe, as well as a celebration of life. Announcements will be made.
