BETTY CHANG Obituary

BETTY HUNG LAN LEE ONTAI CHANG On June 18, 2024, heaven welcomed a new angel. Betty Hung Lan Lee Ontai Chang was born on October 18, 1936 in Honolulu to "Bertha" Kam Sui Chock Lee and "Lee-Lan" Oi Fu Lee. She was one of 10 children, who from an early age, learned the meaning of hard work, resiliency and Love Of God and Family. Her Faith and dedication to her 'ohana remained ever present, even as she battled Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) with great dignity and courage. Up until her passing at age 87, she lived life to the fullest, cherishing each day as a Gi from God. Her greatest joys were family gatherings, dancing, lunch with friends and traveling with her beloved husband, Frederick Chang. Betty was dedicated to helping those in need, whether it be through her parish, volunteering at St. Francis Hospital, or providing a compassionate ear to her many "hanai daughters and sons" and people whom she met that quickly became friends. Betty is survived by her loving husband, Frederick Chang, sister Thelma Lee and her children: Sidney (Stacey) Ontai; Lisa (Peter Stone) Ontai; Laurie (Terry) LaGrange; and Eddie (Cindy) Ontai. She also has 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly: Laurelin (Luis) Sanchis; Amy (CJ Brenning) Ontai; Christopher Ontai; Jarret Stone; Janelle (Marco Peyfuss) Stone; Gavin and Christian LaGrange; Daniel, Marlee, Raymee and Andrew Ontai; and great grandchildren Isabel and Maria Sanchis. Through Frederick, she was also blessed with stepchildren Sandra (Earl) Ching; Andrea (Eldon) Ching; and Gregory Chang; as well as stepgrandchildren Adam (Tia) and Megan Ching; Max and Melannie Ching; and Tiannie and Tehannie Chang. "Mom, thank you for the many sacrifices you made throughout your life for the betterment of our family. You were our matriarch whose strength, charisma and love of family will be sorely missed. But we celebrate a life well lived and your entry into heaven, reunited with your siblings and parents." Visitation from 10 - 11 am on Saturday, September 7 at Sacred Hearts Church, Maryknoll School, 1701 Wilder Avenue. Catholic mass to follow at 11 am. Aloha attire. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sacred Hearts Church, sacredhearthnl.org.

As a childhood friend, I remember Betty as well as her brothers and sisters. Her brother Cal was my best friend and I remember the laughter and love in their home, which was always welcoming. May she rest in peace.
