Darlene Johns Obituary

DARLENE THERESA HAUNANI JOHNS 73, wife to Charles (Ted) Johns, mother to Keith (Anne) and Jessica (Brandon), and grandmother to Iona, Julian, Adrian, and Jordan, died peacefully in Honolulu on August 17. Born Darlene Martin on March 12, 1951, Darlene was the fifth of eight children growing up in Waimanalo, Oahu. A 1969 graduate of Kailua High School, Darlene met her future husband in 1976, and they married in Waimanalo in 1979 before moving together to Columbus, Ohio. Darlene worked for 30 years at The Ohio State University, retiring in 2010. That year, Darlene and Ted moved back to Hawai'i, where they built a home on land passed down through Darlene's grandfather, William Kumukoa, on the east end of Moloka'i. At home, she found fulfillment tending the garden, making jewelry, weaving lauhala, and participating in her local Kupuna program. Darlene lived with conviction and a courageous optimism. Her first grandchild gave her the name, Mana, Hawaiian for life force and spiritual power. Darlene's spirit will live on in all the lives she touched. VISITATION 9:30 A.M.
