Doris Higa Obituary

DORIS YASUKO HIGA Doris Yasuko Higa, 94, passed away gracefully, at home, in her sleep on January 5, 2025. As the eldest of eight children of Yako and Tsuruko Nakamatsu, she was referred to as Neesan. After her father's passing, she helped her non-English speaking mother navigate the community and keep her seven siblings together as a family. She graduated from Farrington High School in 1949. During her high school years, she worked tirelessly as a waitress to support the family. She married Tomoyoshi ("Tomo") Higa in 1954, and they raised two children. She worked as an accounts payable clerk for the Army and Air Force Exchange System retiring in 1989. In her retirement, she babysat her three grandchildren. She loved to travel, especially to Las Vegas, enjoyed cooking, watching Korean dramas, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member of Nakagusuku Sonjin Kai. Throughout her life, in her roles as Neesan, Wife, Mother and Grandmother she dutifully sacrificed for her siblings, children and grandchildren. She is survived by her two children Milton Higa (Debbie) and Patsy Nanbu (Rodney), three grand- children Sarah Nanbu (Brandon Fukuda), Justin Higa-Sarris (Tori Higa-Sarris), and Kayla Nanbu, and siblings, Emmie Otake (Franklin), Nancy Uramoto (Andrew), Alice Sasaki, and Kenneth Nakamatsu (Christine), and sister in law, Leila Nakamatsu. Predeceased by her husband Tomo in 2021, siblings Lois Higa, Betty Ono, and William Nakamatsu. Visitation is on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Hosoi Mortuary at 1:00 pm, with services to follow at 2:00 pm.
