Fredric Chuckovich Obituary

FREDRIC DUKE CHUCKOVICH, DDS Fred Chuckovich passed away on November 28, 2025. Born October 12, 1942, in Santa Monica to Daniel Milton and Suzanne Miller Chuckovich, Fred grew up in Southern California and attended Stanford University before earning his dental degree from UCLA. He practiced dentistry in Molokai and Kahala. Patients appreciated both his skill and his straightforward, caring manner. After retiring, Fred moved to Mokuleia near Silva Channels, his favorite surf break, where he found great joy and contentment. He embraced his north shore community and loved his neighborhood. His German Shepherds, Gino then Jesse and now Tosh, were always by his side. An athlete and waterman, Fred surfed and played volleyball at the Outrigger Canoe Club. At OCC, Fred made lifelong volleyball friends and he nurtured a deep love for the ocean. Fred traveled extensively, including many trips to Kiribati (Fanning Is.), where he surfed, fished and volunteered his dental skills to care for the local community. Fred was fiercely loyal to friends and family, many of whom called him "Papa." To know Papa was to know someone who would be there, no matter what, without hesitation or condition. Known as the original "MacGyver," he could fix anything with ingenuity and persistence. Papa was always ready to help anyone, whether repairing something or stitching up a surf injury. Papa took great pride and joy in watching his grandchildren grow and delighting in their accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, Mary Morton; children Kelly Gamble (Chris) and Bret Chuckovich (Kelsey); grandchildren Morgan Lockhart (Andrew), Gunnar Carvalho, Caple Gamble, Mia Chuckovich, and Parker Chuckovich; great-grandchild Maren Lockhart; and sister Dana Howe. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ronald and Jay. A celebration of Fred's life will be held Sunday, March 8, at 10:00 am at 68-727 Crozier Dr., followed by a paddle-out to Silva's. Fred is remembered for his intelligence, independence, generosity and loyalty and for the lives he influenced through his work, passions and friendships.
