I first met George in 2011, shortly after JR and I returned to Hawai`i following 28 years in Alaska. Our Sheltie passed away just one month after the move, and while still grieving, we attended an all-breed show in hopes of finding a Sheltie puppy. George and Sharon Katahira were the only exhibitors who welcomed us without hesitation and generously allowed us to spend time with their Shelties. That kindness marked the beginning of a lasting friendship, and George and Sharon soon became cherished mentors.
George instilled in me that conformation is a sport, and that true sportsmanship matters just as much as winning. He taught me to always congratulate the winners; to applaud every dog in the classes if you applaud one; to be a fierce competitor in the ring while remaining gracious and friendly afterward; and to share the love of your breed in order to strengthen and promote it. Together, George and Sharon emphasized the importance of giving back to the sport-never being only a taker-and encouraged me to do whatever I could to support and promote both my breed and the sport as a whole.
One of my fondest memories is finishing the Katahiras´ last Sheltie, Kami, who was very special to me. On the day I first met George and Sharon, Kami curled up in my lap and gently licked my tears as I mourned the loss of our Sheltie, who had passed the day before. She always sought me out when I visited their home. A few years later I guided Kami to her championship at seven years old and that remains one of my proudest accomplishments.
The Katahiras even traveled with me to Alaska, where I introduced George to fishing for red salmon on the Kenai River and they watched me show at the Kenai All-Breed Shows. Sharon accompanied me to one of my first Sheltie National Specialties, where she warmly introduced me to many of her friends. We also crossed paths several times in Las Vegas, where George attempted to teach me his gambling strategies-though I always told him I preferred to leave my money in the show ring rather than in Vegas.
Over the years, they generously cared for one or two of our dogs whenever JR and I traveled. George and I spoke or texted often, and he shared his financial knowledge to help me manage investments so I could continue participating in the sport.
I last saw George the day before he left us; he was his usual self-optimistic and at peace with what lay ahead. He was one of the most courageous and steadfast individuals I have ever known. I brought Bolt to say goodbye and when George caressed his fur and rubbed his face, a special peace lit George´s face.
I deeply miss our conversations, jokes, debates, and laughter. George was a true friend and mentor who will live in my heart forever. Thank you, George, for all you gave me over the years. I will pay it forward, just as you taught me. And someday, I will join you, Sharon, Kami, Windy, Vegas, Kanoe and the rest of the gang. A hui hou.

I got my first Sheltie from George and his wife Sharon over 30 years ago. He was always so generous with his time in teaching me about the breed and how to train my dog. May he rest in peace and may the Lord bless him and his surviving loved ones.
Aloha,
