GUIDO GIACOMETTI Obituary
GUIDO LUIGI GIACOMETTI Guido Luigi Giacometti, of Kamuela, Hawaii, passed away October 12, 2024 from complications following a stroke. Guido was born on November 15, 1938 in Hilo to Luigi Giacometti and Gretchen Stryker, and was the grandson of his namesake, Guido Giacometti, who emigrated from Italy in 1902 to work for the Olaa Sugar Mill. Like his father, Luigi, Guido graduated from Punahou School. He then earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA degree from Harvard University. After college, he served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and then the U.S. Army until 1963. From 1970 to 1985, he worked for Kamehameha Investment Corporation and later for Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate, initially managing development projects in Keauhou-Kona and later assisting with management of the Estate's real estate portfolio. From 1996 1998 he served as President and CEO of Grove Farm Company. Later, he acted as a consultant on local real estate projects and, through Court appointments, served in numerous cases as a receiver, commissioner and bankruptcy trustee. In 2011, he was a founding officer and director of Anekona Ouli Kanehoa VFD Company ("AOK"), a nonprofit organization whose purpose was to support the 9 Bravo Volunteer Fire Company. AOK raised funds and oversaw the development of a fire garage station that was conveyed to the Hawaii Fire Department. AOK also assisted in providing funding for trucks, equipment, supplies and other support to 9 Bravo Volunteer Fire Company. Since 2009, he served as a director and for many years as an officer of Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit developer of self-help and low-income rental housing on the Big Island. Guido's lifelong passion was hunting, primarily for pheasant and other game birds. He was a legacy member of the Parker Ranch Hunting Hui. He spent many happy seasons with good friends and his beloved Brittany Spaniel bird dogs walking over the breezy uplands of the Big Island. He also enjoyed his many travels to Alaska, Oregon, and other mainland states to visit friends and hunt for bigger game. Guido was an avid runner for many years, participating in marathons and other races throughout Hawaii. He and his family spent nostalgic stays at his grandfather's hundred year old cottage in Volcano Village, Hawaii. In 2001, Guido reestablished contact with his Italian cousins in Bergamo and greatly enjoyed visits with them. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Susan Tius, an attorney. He is also survived by his children, Tim Giacometti (Susan Leaman), Ben Giacometti, and Ann Martin (David); by his grandchildren, Emma Pates (Jesse), Alec Giacometti, and Cole Baldwin; and by his loyal Brittanys, Lani and Ele'ele. A celebration of his life will be held early next year. Donations in his memory may be sent to The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation, Inc., P. O. Box 1285, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96745, designated to "9 Bravo Volunteer Station."
