Hiroshi Nishida Obituary

HIROSHI NISHIDA Hiroshi Nishida (1930-2025) passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, at the age of 94 with daughter Laurel by his side. He was a loving husband to Michiko and father to Craig, Laurel and Clinton, teaching them, through example, the importance of values such as honesty, fairness, kindness, and generosity. Hiroshi was born and grew up in Honolulu, youngest brother of Robert and Kenji. At the University of Hawaii, he met Michiko through their shared callings to be educators. His life was one filled with service to others: to his country during his years in the Army, to his community for decades through his contributions as a Lions Club officer and member, and to the education of Hawaii's youth of all ages during his career as a principal at Central High, Stevenson Intermediate, and Ali'iolani Elementary. There were future family members, friends, and acquaintances who, about to meet him for the first time, might have thought this principal would be a stern disciplinarian figure. That image would quickly vanish as he put them at ease with his jokes and friendly, easy-going personality. Hiro loved singing: At karaoke, while working at home, and while getting his littlest son to sleep, reading "A Gift-Bear for the King" and singing a melody he created from the hero's written song lyrics. Parts of his personality could be seen in the family house: the attention to detail in the construction of terrace rock walls, the energy saving of the solar water heater, and the giving back to the land of composting. He enjoyed visiting Japan (not often enough) and Vegas (more often, but always responsibly). His favorite activities post-retirement were volunteering as a Lions Club member, staying connected with his high school classmates through his work on the reunion committee, and of course singing with his karaoke group. Private services were held. Hiroshi is survived by his three children. He lives on through the many people he positively impacted during his life.
