John Maguire Obituary

JOHN JOSEPH MAGUIRE JR. John Joseph Maguire Jr., the son of John Joseph and Katherine Green Maguire, died on October 5, 2024, in Waianae at the age of 93. Born in Kapahulu, he preceded in death by his older brother Bill, younger siblings Merna (Kin-In), Katherine "Kay" (Pires), George "Ging" and Charles "Bubu" Maguire. A proud 1948 graduate of Roosevelt High School and 1952 class of Hartnell College. From 1952-1955 John played for the All Army Team and toured with Art Kim and the Washington Generals against the Harlem Globetrotters. John returned to Oahu and worked Traffic Control at Hickam Air Force Base while also volunteering on intramural and youth basketball leagues. In 1972 he began a career with US Customs and started the US Customs Explorer program. He was awarded the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver honor, and his legacy continues as many explorers remain Customs Supervisors today. John is survived by his sons: John Daniel Maguire (Robyn), Gary Mark Maguire (Terry), Christopher Paul Maguire (Hope), and daughter Ceslee Kay Maguire-Gaddis (David); 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grand- children; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Mililani Mortuary Makai Chapel. Visitation begins at 8:30 am and service at 9:30 am. Burial to follow, 1:00 pm at National Cemetary of the Pacific, Punchbowl.
