JUNE SHIMODA Obituary

JUNE ALOHA (NAIPO) SHIMODA was born on June 17, 1933 in Kohala, Hawaii - the sixth of ten children of Hiram Kihapiilani Naipo and Mary Akui Liu. She was raised in Kohala until her family relocated to Oahu and she attended Kamehameha School for Girls. While there, she was elected student body president, built formative friendships, and graduated in 1951.

In her senior year she met the love of her life and future husband, Stanley Sueo Shimoda, while being treated at Leahi hospital. They would attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa together where they built lifetime friends which they would affectionately refer to as their "worse-den-family". Family was always June's priority - the one she built with Stanley, the Naipos, the Shimodas, and her "worse-den-family".

June earned a bachelors degree in education with a minor in French, and later returned to achieve a masters in education from UH Manoa. June worked as an elementary school teacher on the mainland, tutored students individually in Honolulu, and became the office manager for Stanley's gastroenterology practice at Kuakini Medical Plaza. After his retirement, she continued as office manager for her son, Dr. Neal Shimoda.

June passed away peacefully on Saturday August 9, 2025 at the age of 92. She is survived by her brothers Merrill Naipo and Ollney Naipo, and her adoring children - Marion (Phil Ricker) Shimoda, Neal and Paige Shimoda, Sandy (Wil Green) Shimoda, Cynthia (Mike) Ohata, her grandchildren - Alyssa (Barrett Courtney) Shimoda, Jordan and Gina Shimoda, Merrick Ohata, Nainoa Ohata, and great grandchild - Alohilaniokala Shimoda.

June had a sharp intellect, was incredible with children, and was tough to beat at cards. She played ukulele, danced hula, learned ikebana, was a terrific seamstress, and loved teaching Sunday School. She will always be remembered for her infectious smile, heart warming personality, and the way she embodied aloha wherever she went.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday October 23, 2025 at Harris United Methodist Church in Nuuanu.
