MAE WONG Obituary

MAE CHING WONG Mae Ching Wong of Kaneohe, passed peacefully at her home on January 18, 2024. Born May 19, 1930, in Honolulu, Hawaii, she graduated from St. Andrew's Priory in 1949, and after more than 30 years service, retired from the Hawaiian Telephone Company as a government communications supervisor in 1983. She lived in Yokosuka, Japan while her husband worked for the Navy from 1983-1988. Besides happily embracing the Japanese culture, she spent her time teaching conversational English to Japanese naval officers and their spouses. Upon his retirement, they lived in Sasebo for a year, and made many wonderful friendships before returning home to Kaneohe. "Nana" was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who never missed a birthday greeting, made the best jook and jai just like her mother did, always cooked up everyone's favorite dishes from black bean spareribs with aburage to nishime to steamed pork hash and lup cheong. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Eugene D.C. Wong; children Brian S.W. Wong (Nancy), Eugenie-Mae Kincaid (Christopher), Stephen S.M. Wong (Vanessa); 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces; and paternal aunt and uncle, Jo and Raymond Ching. Private burial. Inurnment at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.
