Nicole was one of my closest childhood best friends. Even though I was the least popular student at our school, she invited me for sleepovers at her Nu'uanu home almost every weekend. Every single one of those weekends was magical. The stuff of dreams. We snuck out of the house after her parents fell asleep and rode our bikes throughout the Dowsett backroads to the rolling, grassy hills of the elementary school. We also had slumber parties in her neighbor's poolside artist studio where she pierced my ear with a safety pin. She taught me to be brave and free, to laugh and have fun. Nicole has always been and forever will be a source of inspiration for me. May love, aloha and comfort surround all those whom love Nicole. Blessed travels, dear sister.

I remember learning of Nicole“s death last year. I was devastated. The description of Nicole in her obituary is spot-on. She used to work as a tech for me at NYU. She would sometimes spend her lunch hours sitting out on the parapet of our building at 35 West 4th Street. This inspired me to write a poem for her. Nic LOVED it! Here it is:
Tease the sun, spirited one.
Taunt him to throw rays at you;
Fiercely piercing your skin
With wonderful lances of Spring.
Gently warmed
As breezes brush broad strokes
Across your golden face.
Calming, soothing;
Away from this place where
Nothing gets near,
Not a worry nor fear.
Play with the day in your spirited way.
Kiss the sun, moon and stars,
Stay ahead of the bars
As remaining uncaged is remaining unaged.
