Nicole Jung Obituary

NICOLE MEI SIU JUNG Nicole Mei Siu Jung died peacefully in the comfort of her home on May 23, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. Born to Natalie Playdon and Walter Jung in 1977, Nicole attended Punahou School, where she flourished as a gifted flautist and athlete. After graduating from New York University, Nicole developed into a uniquely voiced electronic musician and music producer, performing in venues such as MoMA's PS1 and as far away as the Ural Mountains in Russia. It was in NYC that she met her husband. Together they made a home and formed a tight-knit community in Astoria, Queens before moving to O'ahu to be closer to family. In addition to being a gifted artist, Nicole had a diverse career that spanned from information technology to consumer energy efficiency policy. Nicole lived fearlessly and embraced the unconventional. She relentlessly pursued joy and exploration at every opportunity. She was passionate about spending time in the ocean. This was her true joy. Nicole was especially devoted to her vibrant daughter, who is her greatest gift to us. A brave, free, and indomitable spirit, Nicole was blessed with a wide community of friends and family who are forever changed by her generosity, creativity, strength, beauty, and musical talent. In addition to her husband, Henry (Hank) Gonzalez and daughter Gabriela, Nicole is survived by her parents Natalie and George Playdon and Walter and Lucy Jung, her siblings and their spouses, nieces, nephews, and a large extended family. A celebration of her life will be held this summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Nicole M.S. Jung Scholarship Fund at Chaminade University Montessori Lab School. Nicole was one of my closest childhood best friends. Even though I was the least popular student at our school, she invited me for sleepovers at her Nu'uanu home almost every weekend. Every single one of those weekends was magical. The stuff of dreams. We snuck out of the house after her parents fell asleep and rode our bikes throughout the Dowsett backroads to the rolling, grassy hills of the elementary school. We also had slumber parties in her neighbor's poolside artist studio where she pierced my ear with a safety pin. She taught me to be brave and free, to laugh and have fun. Nicole has always been and forever will be a source of inspiration for me. May love, aloha and comfort surround all those whom love Nicole. Blessed travels, dear sister.

I remember learning of Nicole“s death last year. I was devastated. The description of Nicole in her obituary is spot-on. She used to work as a tech for me at NYU. She would sometimes spend her lunch hours sitting out on the parapet of our building at 35 West 4th Street. This inspired me to write a poem for her. Nic LOVED it! Here it is:

Tease the sun, spirited one.
Taunt him to throw rays at you;
Fiercely piercing your skin
With wonderful lances of Spring.
Gently warmed
As breezes brush broad strokes
Across your golden face.
Calming, soothing;
Away from this place where
Nothing gets near,
Not a worry nor fear.
Play with the day in your spirited way.
Kiss the sun, moon and stars,
Stay ahead of the bars
As remaining uncaged is remaining unaged.
