Peter Lewis Obituary

PETER CUSHMAN LEWIS Peter Cushman Lewis, of Honolulu, a fifth generation kama'aina passed away on November 27, 2023, at age 89. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Louise, sister Leilani, children: Peter Jr., Kimberly, and Geoffrey; grandchildren: Oliver, Ethan, Eliza, Aidan, Ella, and Chloe. Peter attended Punahou School and then Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. He went to Williams College and the University of Virginia Law School. After law school, Peter joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956 flying the T-28 Trojan and experiencing a few thrilling close calls! Peter was involved with many community organizations, local politics, and as a justice of the peace for many years, performing over 6,000 weddings. In 1968 and 1978, he was a delegate for the Constitutional Convention of Hawaii serving as Chairman of the Committee of Taxation and Finance. He also served as: President of the Young Lawyers Section of Bar Association of Hawaii; Board president for the Institute for Human Services (1992-1996); Board president for the Neighborhood Justice Center (1993-1995); Commodore, Waikiki Yacht Club (2012); New Zealand Honorary Consul for Hawaii (1998-2013); and was an active board member of EPIC Ohana until he passed. Peter's diverse career included serving as a Per Diem Judge, Honolulu District Court (1970-1984); working as a Deputy Attorney General, State of Hawaii (1962 - 1968); working for Hawaiian Electric Company; and retiring from Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI) as Senior Vice President of Administration and Corporate Secretary for both HEI and American Savings Bank (1968-2005). Peter had many passions including traveling to all parts of the world with his wife Mary Lou and spending lots of time in New Zealand at their South Island home in Queenstown. Peter loved gardening both at their Nuuanu and Queenstown properties. One of his greatest joys was deep sea fishing in the waters off the Hawaiian Islands, a passion he learned from his father and shared with many.
