RICHARD ASATO Obituary

RICHARD TARO ASATO Achieving the milestone of 100, Richard blew out his birthday candles surrounded by family. After crossing the goal line Richard determined it was time to transition to the next world and he passed peacefully at home on August 31, 2025. Richard often reminisced about growing up in Waianae with a particular fondness for Pokai Bay. After the family move to the Vineyard area Richard took an interest in boxing at Palama Settlement and became an accomplished basketball player and a part of the Farrington High School championship team. Thereafter, Richard played travel ball with the Hawaii Nisei after WWII. Travel and sports were pursuits that he continued throughout his lifetime. An avid golfer, Richard was a charter member of the Honolulu International Country Club, a member of Mid-Pacific Country Club, and he enjoyed competing in many golf tournaments. By following University of Hawaii football road games, he enjoyed exploring new places. Traveling to South America connected Richard with his Spanish and Portuguese speaking relatives and at the age of 98, he made his last travel venture to his favorite destination of Las Vegas. As an entrepreneur, Richard's Express was launched with one flatbed truck. During the Territorial Period, Richard expanded his business with another trucking company called Island Movers, Inc. His legacy in trucking continues today as well as warm memories of Richard generously sharing his success with family and friends. Richard married Shigeko (Nakasato) and they raised a family at their first home in Pearl City. He will continue to be remembered through generations, and is survived by Portia Naomi Ige (Gary), Nancy Inouye (Leslie), Nora Kamikawa (Kurt) and Richard Taro Asato Jr. (Rhoda); grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard's memory will be honored with a private service at his home where he loved the view while enjoying his pau hana time.
