RICHARD GUILLORY Obituary

DR. RICHARD JOHN GUILLORY Dr. Richard John Guillory, beloved husband, father, grandfather, poppop, and gong gong, entered eternal rest on September 6, 2022, at the age of 91. Born October 3, 1930, in San Diego, California, he spent his childhood and youth in Brooklyn, New York, and Hillsboro, Oregon. Richard received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Reed College in 1953, and his Ph.D. in Physiological Chemistry from the University of California Los Angeles in 1962. Richard served in the United States Army from 1953-1955 as a member of the nutrition team sent to Taiwan to study and improve the diet of troops. A lover of learning and discovery, Richard taught, researched, and published in the biochemical sciences around the world including at the University of Amsterdam, University of Arizona, Cornell University, University of Hawai'i, Konstanz University (Germany), National Yang Ming University (Taiwan), Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and the University of London. His passion for scientific discovery was matched by his passion for history, and his expansive library spanned ancient Roman and Etruscan civilizations to the founding of the United States. Richard was a resident of O'ahu from 1971 to 2004, contributing much to the community. As faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Hawai'i Manoa from 1971 to 2004, he supported thousands of undergraduate and graduate students during his tenure. His research focused on mitochondrial metabolism and he was a member of many scientific organizations. Richard also served in numerous service organizations in Hawai'i including the American Heart Association, Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club, University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly, and as a lector and choir member at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Wahiawa, Hawai'i. Richard is survived by his wife Stella and their daughter Amber (Sean), and his daughters Cynthia (Tony) and Olivia (Arthur). He is also survived by one sister Rosalee, of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, one brother Ronald, of Hillsboro, Oregon, and three grandchildren - Avery, Hannah, and Sofia. A memorial service with Military Honors will be offered at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawai'i on July 7, 2023, at 11:30 am. Service will be followed by a private gathering.
