SAMUEL GINGRICH Obituary

SAMUEL PHILIP GINGRICH, M.D. Samuel Philip Gingrich, a dedicated physician on The Big Island of Hawaii, passed away peacefully at home on November 8, 2025. "Dr. Sam" was born May 19, 1940, in Akron, Ohio, to Raymond and Edith Gingrich, a Brethren minister, and his mother, a school teacher. He attended Wheaton College in Illinois and Baylor Medical College in Houston, Texas. He then joined the U.S. Navy Submarine Medical School. He loved the Navy and was proud to have been the Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN 658). Dr. Gingrich was Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, and Diving Medicine. He practiced medicine with Waimea Medical Associates and Honokaa Hospital, and then as an Emergency Physician at Hilo Hospital, Lucy Henriques Medical Center, and North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was EMS Director for the Island of Hawaii from 1977 to 2005. He was an Emergency Physician with HEPA (Hawaii Emergency Physicians Association). Dr. Gingrich is survived by his wife, Susan Gingrich, and step-daughter, Julie Keller, of Kamuela, Hawaii. A Celebration of Life will be held: January 6, 2026, at Kahilu Town Hall, Kamuela, Hawaii. Visitation will be at 2:30 p.m., service at 4:00 p.m., followed by the sharing of memories.

Very sad news. Sam was by far and away, one of the best, if not the best ER doc at Hilo Hospital. Took care of his patients and respected colleagues. Saw him last a year ago. Will be missed greatly.
