SUSAN SLAVISH Obituary

SUSAN M. SLAVISH Sue joined our Lord Feb. 23rd after more than 3 years of fighting various cancers. She was born in Cleveland in 1942 and grew up in Pittsburgh,Pa. Her parents were Richard and Mary Elizabeth Senz. She got her BA in Nursing from Duquesne Uni in 1964 and immediately joined the Army volunteering for Vietnam. After Basic Training, the Army posted her to Tripler Hospital in Honolulu. Sue and Ed were married 60 years ago in July, 1965, just before the transfer to Tripler. A year later In 1966 Sue was promoted to Captain after 2.5 years of active duty. Sue spent the next 36 years at Queens Hospital as their Infection Control Coordinator. A couple years later she secured her Masters Degree in Public Health from UH just in time for the AIDS epidemic. She was soon President of the Life Foundation, educating the public on minimizing the AIDS risk. Later she was appointed to and Chaired the Governor's Commission on Hospital Waste and in 2000 she was the National President of APIC, Association of Infection Control Coordinators. Upon retirement from Queens she was hired part time as an instructor with Joint Commission Research and sent to Saudi Arabia 3 times and once to Rwanda. Her fondest hobby was as Treasurer and Alto with the Windward Chorale Society. When she finally retired, she and Ed loved to take cruises. Sue was very active with St.Anns Church in Kaneohe. She started the daily 6:00AM rosary group. She participated in the Berevement committee and the Bible Study group. She was also a Cantor and Eucharistic Minister She is survived by her husband, Edward, daughter, Kristen, SIL, Joseph Souza III, grandsons, Kaimana & Kayla Goya Souza, Iokepa Souza, and Kahiau Souza plus great grandson, Keakaikawai Souza and by Sue's sister, Margaret Wyvill & Samuel Wyvill, BIL, James Slavish & Norma Paiaina Slavish, and SIL, Kathleen English & Richard English. Services will be held 9:30 AM March 28th at St. Anns Catholic Church, on Haiku Rd. Kaneohe across from Windward Mall. All who knew and loved Sue are welcome to attend and join us for lunch. I expect Sue to shortly be appointed to God's Exec. Committee!

Sue was a wealth of knowledge and had a tremendous impact in whatever career path she chose. She was such an important leader at QMC. Sue had a great sense of humor; she touched my life and the lives of so many. There are few professionals like her. She will be missed. My sympathy to her family and friends. She is in God's loving hands now.
