WALTER CHEE KEONG WONG 91, of Aiea, passed away peacefully at home on April 18, 2024. He was born on April 19, 1932 to Edward Bow Kin Wong and Alice G Y Young and was one of 7 children. After graduating from Saint Louis School in 1951, Walter enlisted in the United States Air Force. After serving 4 years, he enrolled at Golden Gate University and graduated with an Accounting degree. He moved back to Hawaii, became a Certified Public Accountant and operated his own firm, Walter CK Wong CPA, Inc. until his retirement. Aside from spending time with family, he had many other interests such as traveling, orchid growing, narcissus carving and Oshibana. He was involved with such organizations as the Lions Club, Hawaii Special Olympics and AYSO Soccer. In 1974, soccer was a relatively new sport in Hawaii and AYSO was only played in Hawaii Kai. After inquiring about joining their league, he was told to start his own region. He took up the challenge and recruited players, volunteers and coaches within the Aiea district and started out with 2 teams and played in the military league until there were enough teams to form the Aiea Region. Soon he was able to form other regions in various districts on Oahu and on the neighbor islands. He became Hawaii's first AYSO Area Director overseeing the entire state of Hawaii. He established the Rainbow Tournament and the Kirk Banks Tournament which are tournaments still played today. He was able to grow AYSO in Hawaii with the help of countless friends and volunteers. In 2015, Walter was inducted into the AYSO National Hall of Fame and was recognized by the State of Hawaii Legislature and the Honolulu City Council for his contributions to AYSO soccer. Walter is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lillian, sons Stuart (Ronda) and Rick (Eloise), daughter Jennifer (Darryle) Matsumiya, grandchildren, Marissa (Reid) Shimada, Jared (Erica), Joshua, Taylor, Joey, Jayk, and Jayse and great-grandchildren, Emi, Skyler and Isla.
