Beverly Desmond Obituary
BEVERLY YUKINO DESMOND Our dear Beverly Yukino Desmond, 74, passed away on June 17, 2024 at Queen's Medical Center following a stroke. She was born Sept. 25, 1949 in Honolulu to Yoshiyuki Otoshi and Betty Kiyoko Otoshi. The Otoshis lived on Liona St., where Bev could hear concerts coming from the Civic Auditorium, often presented by Tom Moffatt. Thus began her lifelong love of oldies rock and roll music, as well as 50th State wrestling. In 1960 the family moved into a new home in Nu'uanu. Bev went to elementary school at Hongwanji Mission School, then middle school at Kawananakoa Intermediate. In 1967 she became a proud graduate of Roosevelt High School. Bev would sing the Roosevelt alma mater on request ever since. She studied at University of Hawai'i Manoa campus, then began her career at First Hawaiian Bank in 1969. She held various positions, starting out in Mastercharge, then moving to Foreign Exchange and Mortgage Service Center. Bev's Dad, Yoshiyuki, worked at First Hawaiian Bank for forty-three years with zero days of absence. Beverly followed in Dad's footsteps by working fifty years, being absent only for maternity leave. Bev is fondly remembered for her baking skills. She was happy to share lemon bars or caramel cuts with co-workers, who were very happy to enjoy them. In June of 1982 Beverly and Richard met at a picnic up on St. Louis Heights. Richard was impressed by Bev's radiance. Bev was impressed by Richard's skill at horseshoes. Bev and Richard were married in 1987. Nine years later they were blessed with a daughter, Gillian Miyuki Desmond. Bev was so proud when Jill graduated from Kawananakoa and Roosevelt, just like Mom. Gillian earned a degree in mathematics from Pomona College. Through the years, Bev, Richard, and later, Jill, took many trips to visit the Desmond family in Massachusetts. Different seasons brought new and different experiences: winter snow, autumn leaves, and summer on Cape Cod. Each visit included a road trip to a New England state, New York City, or Washington D.C. Beverly shared her joy, wonder, and love, with one and all. The family thanks Lunalilo Home, Straub Medical Center, Project Dana, Furukawa Adult Day Care, and First Hawaiian Bank for their love and support. Survivors include Richard and Gillian, brother Grant Otoshi (Lynn), and their two sons Chad (Joanna) and Chris (Rose). Private services for Beverly have been held at Honpa Hongwanji Hawai'i Betsuin in Nu'uanu. Family requests no koden. Donations in Bev's memory may be made to Aloha United Way or Hawai'i Community Foundation. Arrangements Provided By: Hosoi Garden Mortuary
