BOB MASUDA Obituary

BOB MASUDA Robert Yoichi Masuda was born in Honolulu in 1928 the son of immigrants from Hiroshima. He was predeceased by seven siblings, (Fusae Nobuta, Toshiko Mente, Alice Shizue Horie, Yoshie Hosoi, Shizuo Masuda, Kiyoko Yamamoto and Roy Mitsuji Masuda). He attended Farrington High School and then the University of Hawaii where he graduated in 1958 with a degree in Social Work. Bob married Alice Shinkawa in 1955. Alice predeceased Bob in 2015. Bob was a significant figure at the University of Hawaii serving as an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work and a Supervising Social Worker for the Hawaii Department of Social Services and Housing. He retired from the University of Hawaii as the Assistant Dean of Social Work in 1984. "Uncle Bob" to many, was known for his work in social welfare and community engagement, influencing policies and practices in Hawaii's social services. After retiring from the University of Hawaii, Bob went to work with the YMCA in Hiroshima, Japan as an English Instructor in 1985 and then moved to the Hiroshima Institute of Technology as a Professor of English, retiring from that position in 1993. Bob passed away at 15 Craigside on December 3, 2025 and will be inurned with his beloved wife Alice at Diamond Head Memorial Park.
