Donald Chang Obituary

DONALD S.M. CHANG March 16, 1934 ~ March 12, 2023 It is with much sadness that we share the passing of our cherished Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend, and Former Honolulu Fire Department Fire Chief. Donald passed away peacefully on March 12, 2023, at home in Aiea, Hawai`i, surrounded by his `ohana. He was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i, and attended Maryknoll High School, the University of Hawaii and served in the Hawaii Army National Guard from 1951 - 1957. Donald joined the City and County of Honolulu as a Fire Fighter in 1957. He was passionate about creating a safer community through prevention and preparedness, and was very proud of the great work, service and dedication by the men and women of the Honolulu Fire Department. Donald's service included positions from Fire Fighter, Fire Equipment Operator, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Fire Deputy Chief and Fire Chief of the City & County of Honolulu until his retirement in 1994. After retirement, Donald continued to support many of the Fire Department organizations and associations with focus on community awareness and preparedness. He supported legislation on the installation of fire sprinkler systems and other safety measures for high rise buildings. Donald served on the Hawaii State Fire Council, the American Red Cross Hawaii State Chapter, Executive Board Member of the Aloha Council for Boy Scouts of America, President of the Friends of the Fire House and Commissioner for the Department of Hawaiian Homelands. Donald was married to Frances M. (Spencer) Chang for over 65 years. They both graduated from Maryknoll High School and married in 1957. They enjoyed traveling, golfing and spending time with the `ohana. Donald is also survived by his children: Kathy Chang, Kimberly (Augustine) Agas, Randall (Nancy) Chang; grandchildren: Micah (Chanel) Agas, Kayla Chang, Kaitlyn Agas and Haley Chang; sister Dolores Koki. The `ohana would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Craig Hamasaki, Dr. Kahealani Rivera, Navian Hawaii and the Wilson Care Group. Visitation: 10:00 a.m.; Mass: 11:30 a.m. on May 9, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Church. Parking is located in the open parking lot just before St. Elizabeth Church, entrance from Moanalua Road. Burial to follow at Mililani Memorial Park.
