I've forgotten exactly when i met Sir Hu. But i remember i met him personally sometime June of 2015 when i attended the OPBF Convention in Bacolod City, Philippines. Sir HU talked about judging at that time and the moment he first talked i was already glued to him until he finished his topic. After he's done i immediately approached him and asked if i could have a copy of the materials he presented, he promised he will send me by email. I thought that was it - a polite way to refuse a request. But to my surprise, 3 days after, voila in my inbox was a copy of the materials i was requesting. I was so happy i profusely thanked him. From that moment, the open and constant communication betwen me and my dear mentor Sir HU started.
Fast forward some 4 years after, this after countless calls and chats, my dear mentor asked me a favor, one morning of November. He said, in his usual firm tone - "Ärnie, would you consider helping me at OPBF? Frank Hadley and I are taking over starting Jan 2020 and i need you to help me with the Ratings." Of course! i exclaimed. it would be an honor to collaborate with my mentor, thats a validation for me, that he trusts me and believes in my capacity as a boxing official. From that time on, notwithstanding the pandemic, the calls and chats were practically everyday! no weekends, no holidays! and i was extremely enjoying the banters, the discussions, the tounge-lashing (few times) with my dear mentor Sir Hu. I can feel his trust (towards me and my capacity) tremendously growing each day. We breezed thru the pandemic and by the end of the 2021 season OPBF was awarded the WBC Federation of the Year! Why not? We were the only boxing org in Asia that was holding fights in the midst of the pandemic! Sir hu was very proud, i was very happy to see my mentor happy with my work. Until tragedy strike.
Sometime May 2023 i received a call from Sir Hu informing me that hes taking a breather with the OPBF to focus on his medical condition. Thats the time he told me of his condition. I cried. Ive told him to kae rest and do everything he can to stay away from anything that gives him stress. I also promised to take care of business - OPBF side. Just take a rest, "dont worry about the OPBF, ill take care of it Sir HU" i said in halting manner. He said he needs an elaborate medical process but was very optimistic he'll recover. From that time on i took over his tasks (or tried to), i avoided calling him as i am worried he will ask whats happening in boxing. Although not a day passed that i havent thought of him, saying a silent prayer for my mentor.
On June 28, a day before departing for Seoul SK to supervise an OPBF Silver bout there, i received a video call from my mentor. There he was, greatly emaciated, still on his hospital bed. He just called to say goodbye. He said hes going home and that he expects me to continue what im doing for OPBF. His last words were "I LOVE YOU ARNIE. STAY WITH YOUR PRINCIPLES, YOU WILL DO GOOD"... I hardly can speak, i was crying. It was too much for me to bear. He said ba-bye and turned off the call patch without me being able to say anything except "I love you Sir Hu"... It was the worst day.
The next day, i flew to South Korea. and around noontime, i received a message from Mam Pam, that my dear mentor Sir Hu had passed. I cried again in my room. I dont know how long ive cried, but i remember it was probably one of the few times i cried very hard. My dear mentor had passed. Probably the only person who believed i have what it takes to be a good boxing official. Hes forever gone.
17 months have passed, but still i miss him. I, together with the thousand lives he touched will forever remember him with great fondness. I am.
Thank you dear mentor.

I remember the countless hours we spent together over the past 20 years running grassroots campaigns for so many candidates in which your record of wins far out wieght the losses, I think you only lost one race during the last two decades. You "showed me the ropes" during the 2004 Mayorial Campaign in which the hard work paid off and Mufi Hannemann beat the big dollar candidate, Dr. Duke Bainum. Thank you our fearless grassroots leader. Goes to show you that a grassroots campaign model can beat an impersonal highly financed campaign any day.
You taught me many things during our many golf rounds. Lets face it when you spend 5 to 6 hours sitting and riding the golf cart with someone, for years. You can say you get to really know one another pretty well.
Vail my friend and brother from Iolani class of 1997 and Michelle his wife and the entire Minn clan, my greatest condolenses and may God lift up your spirits. I am thankful to have been a part of your family for most of my life and blessed to have spent so much quality time with 3 generations of Minns. Grandpa Minn, your father Hubert and you Vail and Michelle. Lets not be strangers. Time is short. Look we are now the Uncles and Aunties.
Rest in peace my friend, and play that perfect pain free round of golf for all of us.
almighty God please I love peace and love and joy fruits of the spirit they can bring closure and and peace and happiness to a family that has lost its patriarch. Lord give it the strength that both his grandfather and father had to lead the Minn Clan to greatness as his fathers before him. I know Lord that you will cover the Minn family with Love and Security as you have for so many generations. We ask this through our Lord and savior Jesus Christ who lives and Reigns with the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever amen.
