IRVING FUKUNAGA Obituary

IRVING TETSUO FUKUNAGA Irving Tetsuo Fukunaga, born on September 4, 1933, peacefully passed from life on earth to an eternal life of perfect peace, on the early morning of Nov. 18, 2024. Throughout his life, he had served his country, community, family and friends well. He was a valued graduate of Iolani School and the University of Hawaii, a proud veteran of the United States Army, and a dedicated professional in the Sanitation Division of the Health Department of Hawai'i for thirty-six years, from 1958 to his retirement as a supervisor in 1994. During his lifetime he excelled in golf, bowling and fishing, having at one time owned a fishing vessel. He generously and graciously shared his knowledge and skills with his family, friends and co-workers. For years, his co-workers enjoyed a traditional Japanese new year's celebration at his spacious Manoa home. In welcoming the new year, he also shared with his loved ones his artful kadomatsu arrangements and, on new year's morning, his tasteful ozoni. Irving was pre-deceased by his parents, Tadashi and Yoshiko Fukunaga and his beloved wife, Ellen Keiko Fukunaga. He is survived by his son, Cory Mikio Fukunaga, his brother and four sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews, along with their children and grandchildren. A private memorial service will be offered by the Tenrikyo Taiheiyo Church in Mo'ili'ili, to which he was a lifelong member.
