Jason Nishikawa Obituary

JASON YUZO NISHIKAWA Jason Yuzo Nishikawa, 51, passed away on June 7, 2023, peacefully at home embraced by the loving support of family and friends, after a courageous battle with Stage 4 Thymic Carcinoma. Born the middle son of Lillian and the late Marcus Nishikawa, Jason was a proud graduate of `Iolani School and Santa Clara University, where he earned his degree in civil engineering. Jason carried his professional engineer credentials and years of experience as a successful civil engineer at Sato and Associates. In 2000, he decided to make a significant career change into his ultimate calling and became a licensed real estate agent. He joined his brother Kevin and Uncle Dale at Marcus and Associates, the firm that his father Marcus, started in 1971. Jason excelled as a residential agent from the start, winning the Aloha Aina Newcomer of the Year award in 2001, HBR's prestigious People's Choice award in 2006, and recognized in Hawaii Business Magazine as one of Hawaii's top 100 Agents. During his 23 years in the industry, he always made time to give back and served as a Director of the Honolulu Board of Realtors and as Chair and Vice Chair of HBR's Metro Regional Group, as well as serving as a member of numerous committees almost every year, starting in 2003. In 2021, Jason became an equity partner and Executive Vice President at Marcus Realty, where he was Broker in Charge of Residential Brokerage. His dedication to helping clients achieve dreams of homeownership and lobbying for home affordability at the "middle of the ladder" culminated in 1,045 new residences for hard-working families at 801 South Street. In 2017, Jason along with his friends and business partners Derek Lock and Keslie Hui formed HNL Development. HNL stands for Honolulu, the city they love and serve as affordable housing developers. HNL is also an acronym that stands for the first letter of each partners' last name, Hui, Nishikawa and Lock. Since the company's inception, Jason and his partners have helped affordable housing legislation on Oahu come to fruition. In 2022, they completed their first development, a brand new 25-unit affordable rental housing project in Liliha. In 2023 they will complete 36 brand new affordable rental housing units in Wahiawa. Also in 2023, the company began construction of two affordable housing projects in the McCully neighborhood. Jason's legacy through HNL Development will develop over 200 affordable rental housing units on Oahu. Jason was able to instantly light up any room, he brought friends together by creating Udaman Golf Club, was a 3rd generation season ticket holder and avid UH Football fan, loved going to Vegas with Danny and friends, and playing poker. As he battled his illness, he continued uniting many in faith and prayer. His magical personality will always inspire others to love, work hard, and savor life. Jason was a devoted and loving husband and father. He is survived by wife Joy, children Miya and Marcus; Mother Lillian; and brothers Kevin (Ruthmarie) and Brent (Tracy), along with his nieces, Kendra-Ray, Callie, and Sakura. Valued colleagues, family, and dear friends. A memorial will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, at 'Iolani School, with visitation at 4:30 PM and service from 6:00-7PM.Parking will be available in the Weinberg structure on Kamoku Street and on the Baseball Field via La'au Street.
