MARK RICHERT Obituary

Mark Thomas Richert, son of Dr. Thomas and Loretta Richert passed away on May 12, 2023 at his home in LaJolla California. He was 83. Mark was in the graduating class of 1957 at Punahou School and attended Menlo where he earned his BA then he finished at the University of Hawaii. Mark first went to California on a college swimming scholarship. Upon returning to Hawaii,, he worked at Chuck's Steak House where he later became a partner with owner Chuck Rolles. In 1962 after opening his first steak house restaurant in Los Angeles, he moved to the Red Rest in LaJolla and built Chuck's of LaJolla. Chuck's was well known for its friendly atmosphere and great Jazz music. Mark built 11 Chuck's and continued operations through 1992. During the 70's and 80's, Mark would develop another steak house chain known as Red Baron, with locations at general aviation airports in California, Oregon and Washington. However it was Chuck's LaJolla that he loved the most and stayed with until 1992 when after 30 years, Chuck's closed its door. Owning and operating restaurants was not his only passion. An avid athlete, he competed in 3 Hawaii IronMan Triathlons and 27 marathons. For years, he competed in the Bud Light Triathlon series and ran the Western States 100 Mile Run finishing in approximately 24 hours through the snowy terrain of the Sierra's. He has run the LaJolla half marathon since its conception and swam in the LaJolla rough water event. After closing Chuck's, Mark created MT Richert Construction and became a "Go To" business for all types of repairs with a 2-month waiting period. Mark loved to dive for abalone and enjoyed his open water swims well into his 70's. He is survived by his wife Faye, Daughter Dr. Amber Richert, Son Justin Richert, Brother Lance Richert and Sister Tiare Richert-Finney. Mark was a kind and generous man, he will be missed

I didn´t know Mark but I worked at Chucks Steak House in La Jolla in the 1970s. It is forever etched in my my mind and heart as a truly special place. Excellent food, atmosphere, and best live music. A band called Zzaj, jazz spelled backwards, was absolutely spectacular. Bless Mark for creating such a perfect place. Condolences to his family. End of an era. God bless.

To the Hunk of my Bunk...

In 10 days it will be one year since you went away. There isn´t a day that goes by that I do not think of you, feeling the love I have and will always have for you my sweet, sweet man.

I´m not sure it´ll get easier. I´m hoping... I´m a little stuck and I need to keep moving. You would expect that. I expect that but it´s difficult.
I have so many wonderful memories. We had a great life together. I am forever grateful for the love you showed me and the life we shared.
Thank you Sweetheart!

Your loving wife

Mark Richert was a man's man. Arriving in California in 1959, he built the first California Chuck's Steak House. After opening 3rd Street in L.A., Westwood, and Marina Del Rey, moved to La Jolla in 1963.
He never left his beloved La Jolla. Chucks Steak House became a favorite on Proscpect street for thirty years. Mark was a Instrumented multi-engine pilot and owned and orperated 17 Red Baron Steak Houses. He led through example of honesty and hard work. He will be missed by many who he mentored and helped. Including me. He taught me spear fishing, hunting , boating , sailing, and how to lead through example of hard work.

Sincerly Missed,
Condolences to his wife Deborah Faye Richert
and his son Justin Richert

What great memories come flooding back regarding my lifelong mentor and friend. Mark helped shape my life and beliefs by his example and I feel so fortunate to have had the advantage of sharing time on earth with him.

I had the pleasure of making a few sailboat trips with Mark and his buddy Curt Slater. Two of the best people to be with on a sailboat. Also, I had the pleasure to work a little with Mark. Great person, could fix anything. A legend among men !

Just the other day we were reminiscing about the "good old days" working at Chuck´s steak house in LaJolla. We all remembered Mark Richert, the owner who was super nice and low key, someone to look up to and whom made us all feel like we were one big family. Those were wonderful times, the regular customers, the live jazz and great food. Thanks for the opportunity to make some lifelong friends, earn some money, and get through college. Condolences to your family, sincerely Annie King
